Sélène : Qui appartient, qui a rapport à la Lune
La France ne fait pas qu’exporter du vin et du fromage. Elle nous offre aussi des œuvres musicales très intéressantes, entre autres le premier album de SELENIC, intitulé Resilience, tout frais sorti du fourneau le 25 novembre. C’est difficile ces temps-ci de faire de la musique un tant soit peu originale sans tomber dans le n’importe quoi. SELENIC, c’est du rock progressif qui ne sonne pas comme les vinyles du grand-père, ni comme les affaires plus récentes penchant vers l’ultra technique. Le groupe a déjà lancé deux vidéos en extraits, soit « Lone », à la mélodie accrocheuse, et « Denial », au visuel intrigant et fascinant. L’ensemble offre un son assez brut, mais les arrangements sont complexes, avec des pauses atmosphériques plus réfléchies, notamment sur « Ordeal » (qui à mon avis pourrait être le prochain extrait).
Je dois aussi dire qu’au premier abord, on pourrait être rebuté par la voix un peu nasillarde du chanteur, sauf qu’il faut aller plus loin, car elle participe de l’originalité du groupe. C’est une voix qui sort de l’ordinaire, qui pourrait devenir leur marque de commerce en quelque sorte. On peut entendre des caméos d’instruments comme le piano (« So Long ») et ce qui ressemble à un synthé d’une autre décennie (« Auburn »), donnant à cette pièce un son plus radiophonique (à défaut de dire mainstream). « Closure » est la pièce la plus longue et celle qui s’apparente le plus à un slow, mais pas tout au long. La pièce-titre donne un avant-goût de ce que pourrait livrer SELENIC sur scène – et ce sera leur prochain défi. « Mer de lune » est la jolie et courte instrumentale qui manque parfois aux albums de prog. Ces variations équilibrent l’album de belle façon – chacun y trouvera des éléments qui lui plairont, que ce soit la voix, la rythmique, les paroles. On reste toutefois en terrain connu, avec des sonorités familières et des thèmes universels. Au final, la Lune pourrait en effet être le fil conducteur que suivra SELENIC vers un succès bien mérité.

Selene : Who belongs, who is related to the Moon
France does not only export wine and cheese. It also offers us some very interesting musical works, among which SELENIC‘s first album, entitled Resilience, fresh out of the oven on November 25. It’s hard these days to make music that’s even remotely original without falling into the craziest of genres. SELENIC is progressive rock that doesn’t sound like grandpa’s vinyl, nor the more recent stuff that leans towards the ultra technical. The band has already released two videos as snippets, « Lone », with its catchy melody, and « Denial », with its intriguing and fascinating visual. The whole thing has a fairly raw sound, but the arrangements are complex, with more thoughtful atmospheric breaks, especially on « Ordeal » (which I think could be the next single).
I must also say that at first glance, one might be put off by the singer’s somewhat nasal voice, except that you have to go further, because it is part of the band’s originality. It is a voice that is out of the ordinary, which could become their trademark in a way. You can hear cameos from instruments like piano (« So Long ») and what sounds like a synth from another decade (« Auburn »), giving this piece a more radio-friendly (if not mainstream) sound. « Closure » is the longest piece and the one that feels most like a slow song, but not all the way through. The title track gives a taste of what SELENIC could deliver on stage – and that will be their next challenge. « Sea of Moon » is the pretty, short instrumental that prog albums sometimes lack. These variations balance the album nicely – everyone will find elements that appeal to them, whether it’s the vocals, the rhythm, the lyrics. However, we remain in familiar territory, with familiar sounds and universal themes. In the end, the Moon could indeed be the thread that SELENIC will follow towards a well-deserved success.
