STEEL PANTHER + BUCKCHERRY + KURT DEIMER | THÉÂTRE CAPITOLE (QUÉBEC)| 14.05.2025

Mercredi soir, il fait beau, et enfin chaud. Med et moi on se rend au Capitole pour une soirée haute en couleur. En entrant, on peut voir quelques fans déguisés pour l’occasion, habillés style glam rock et coiffés de perruques extravagantes. Ça donne le ton pour un voyage dans le temps.

KURT DEIMER
Je n’en ai jamais entendu parler du premier groupe, je n’ai aucune idée à quoi m’attendre. La première pièce me laisse perplexe. Le groupe joue un hard rock assez classique, mais le KURT DEIMER lui-même ne chante pas, il parle. C’est… spécial.

Les pièces suivantes sont mieux, mais surtout parce que le bassiste chante vraiment bien et sauve les meubles.

Entre deux morceaux, Kurt Deimer se présente. Il nous dit qu’il a joué dans quelques films, dont Halloween 2018. Ok, c’est un acteur. Mais la musique, là-dedans? Je n’aime pas être négative, mais sincèrement, je crois que le groupe s’en tirerait mieux sans lui. 

BUCKCHERRY n’a pas besoin de présentation. Le groupe de hard rock roule sa bosse depuis le milieu des années 90 et est présent sur la plupart des postes de radio depuis environ 25 ans. Mon dieu que ça ne me rajeunit pas, ça! De la formation d’origine, il ne reste que le chanteur, suivi de près par Stevie, guitariste depuis la reformation du groupe en 2005.

BUCKCHERRY rend bien la marchandise, malgré un départ difficile au niveau vocal. J’ai l’impression que Josh a perdu un peu de sa puissance de voix, mais il a vite repris le ton et le groupe dans son ensemble est assez dynamique.

On a droit à des moves purement hard rock et c’est ce qu’on veut. BUCKCHERRY nous a offert une prestation plus longue que ce à quoi je m’attendais.

Malgré un manque de justesse vocale à quelques occasions, on a eu un excellent show. D’ailleurs le public a embarqué et chanté en coeur sur plusieurs de leurs hits.

Finalement, je veux souligner la générosité du groupe qui, par l’entremise de leur roadie, ont fait monter Marie Eve sur scène afin de les capter de plus près sous tous les angles. 

Connu pour son glam metal ultra kitch, le groupe STEEL PANTHER plonge à fond dans tous les clichés. Pour ceux qui ne les connaissent pas, le groupe se veut une parodie très provocatrice des groupes glam metal des années 70-80. Entre deux morceaux, on a souvent droit à des échanges humoristique qu’on croirait sortis de la bouche d’ados qui ont les hormones dans le plafond! C’est tellement grotesque que c’en est adorable! Ce soir ne fait pas exception : le groupe est entré sur scène sur « Eyes of a Panther », accompagnés de superbes danseuses de pole dance.

Les gars sont habillés de leurs habituels habits glam kitch. Ce sont des bêtes de scène. Mais au-delà des apparences et des paroles assez crues et aucunement politically correct, la musique est excellente dans le genre. Et Michael Starr a une excellente voix qui n’a rien à envier aux vedettes des groupes glam metalet hard rock de l’époque.

Je n’ai qu’une petite remarque moins positive et c’est qu’ils devraient renouveler leurs blagues. C’est la 4^e fois que je les vois et c’est sensiblement la même chose depuis cinq ou six ans. Malgré tout, j’ai trippé comme une lycéenne. Le public aussi. Les filles sont montées sur scène volontiers pour « 17 Girls in a Row ». Certaines se sont prêtées au jeu au grand plaisir des hommes (et certainement quelques femmes aussi) dans la salle. STEEL PANTHER nous a gratifiés de leur musique, de leur sens de la comédie et de leur incroyable énergie. 

Dans l’ensemble, nous avons passé une excellente soirée. Même si c’était un mercredi soir et qu’il n’y avait pas autant de monde que je l’aurais pensé, il y avait de l’électricité dans l’air…

It’s Wednesday evening, the weather is fine and warm at last. Med and I head to the Capitole for a colorful evening. As we enter, we see a few fans dressed up for the occasion, wearing the glam rock style and sporting extravagant wigs. It sets the tone for a trip back in time.

KURT DEIMER
I’ve never heard of the first band, I have no idea what to expect. The first song leaves me perplexed. The band plays fairly classic hard rock, but the KURT DEIMER himself doesn’t sing, he talks. It’s… special. The following songs are better, but mainly because the bassist sings really well and saves the day. In between two songs, Kurt Deimer introduces himself. He tells us he’s been in a few movies, including Halloween 2018. Okay, he’s an actor. But what about the music? I hate to be negative, but honestly, I think the band would be better off without him.

BUCKCHERRY needs no introduction. This hard rock band has been on the road since the mid-90s, and has been a fixture on most radio stations for some twenty-five years. My goodness, that doesn’t make me any younger! From the original line-up, only the singer remains, closely followed by guitarist Stevie, since the band’s reformation in 2005. BUCKCHERRY performs well, despite a difficult start on the vocal front. It seems to me like Josh has lost some of his vocal power, but he soon picks up the tone and the band as a whole is quite dynamic. We’re dealing with pure hard rock moves, and that’s what we want. 

BUCKCHERRY gave us a longer performance than I’d expected. Despite a lack of vocal accuracy on a few occasions, it was a great show. In fact, the audience got on board and sang along to several of their hits. Finally, I’d like to underline the generosity of the band who, through their roadie, brought Marie Eve on stage to shoot them up close from every angle.

STEEL PANTHER
Known for their ultra kitsch glam metal, STEEL PANTHER plunges headlong into every cliché. For those who don’t know them, the band is a provocative parody of the glam metal bands of the ’70s and ’80s. In between songs, we’re often treated to humorous exchanges the likes of that coming from hormone-raging teenagers! It’s so grotesque it’s adorable! Tonight was no exception: the band took to the stage to “Eyes of a Panther”, accompanied by superb pole dancers. The guys are dressed in their usual glam kitsch. They are beasts on stage. But beyond appearances and the rather crude lyrics, which are in no way politically correct, the music is excellent in its genre. And Michael Starr has a great voice that’s every bit as good as that from the stars of the glam metal and hard rock bands of the time. The only less positive point I have is that they should make new jokes. This is the 4th time I’ve seen them, and it’s been pretty much the same for the last 5-6 years.

Despite this, I was tripping like a schoolgirl. And so was the audience. The girls gladly took to the stage for “17 Girls in a Row”. Some of them played along, much to the delight of the men (and certainly a few women too) in the crowd. STEEL PANTHER graced us with their music, their sense of comedy and their incredible energy. 

All in all, we had a great evening. Even though it was a Wednesday night and not as crowded as I would have expected, there was electricity in the air…
