BELVEDERE & INVITÉS: DEBT CEMETARY – WALT HAMBURGER |26.09.2021|L’IMPÉRIAL BELL

Dimanche 26 septembre 2021, mon premier show depuis octobre 2019. Passer tout ce temps sans show pour moi, c’est de la torture.  Dans peu de temps, je serai enfin libérée de ce poids, de ce manque insupportable.

Pendant cette pause forcée, j’ai beaucoup écouté la radio, suivi les réseaux sociaux, question de rester connectée à la scène musicale.  Ce soir, au programme, deux bands dont j’ai souvent entendu parler sur les ondes de PunkRockRadio.ca, mais que je n’ai jamais vus, DEBT CEMETARY et BELVEDERE. Ces derniers ont sorti plus tôt cette année leur sixième album, sur le label Thousand Islands Record, intitulé Hindsight Is The Sixth Sense. Un band et un album grandement appréciés par la communauté punk du Québec, je n’allais pas manquer la chance de découvrir ces bands LIVE. Je suis de ceux qui croient qu’il n’y a rien de mieux, pour découvrir un band, que les voir en chair et en os, le son des amplis dans le fond.

On arrive à l’Impérial Bell, quelques minutes avant que le spectacle commence. Une de mes salles de spectacles préférées. J’ai toujours trouvé que cette salle avait de la classe. C’est encore plus vrai ce soir avec la configuration pandémique. Ambiance très intime avec ces quelques tables soigneusement alignées à distance réglementaire, éclairées par une petite chandelle. J’ai l’impression d’être une invitée spéciale, une privilégiée. Le calme qui règne dans la pièce me rend quand même un peu nostalgique. Je ne suis pas habitué à ce genre d’atmosphère.

Étant une grande fan de punk rapide et énergique, je vais être gâtée ce soir. J’ai fait mes devoirs, j’ai écouté quelques chansons au hasard, mais on n’est jamais préparé à cette poussée d’adrénaline qu’apporte le LIVE. Mais avant cette dose d’énergie punk rock, il y a le réchauffement. La soirée commence avec la prestation acoustique du chanteur/guitariste américain WALT HAMBURGER.

Il a la tâche ingrate de préparer le terrain pour les bands qui vont suivre. Une tâche doublement ardue puisque la foule est constituée d’une cinquantaine de personnes assises tranquillement sur une chaise. Seul sur le stage, il enchaîne les compos et quelques covers avec passion.  Ça prend de la confiance pour performer seul sur scène. J’ai bien aimé.

Place au band DEBT CEMETARY. Beaucoup plus vivant et plus bruyant à cinq musiciens!  Là on parle! Le show commence! Ça chante fort, ça bouge, ça saute, le stage est en feu! Moi qui me sentais mal pour les bands de devoir composer avec une grande salle presque vide, ça ne semble pas les déranger du tout. Ils donnent tout ce qu’ils ont. Pour nous le fun est plutôt interne.  On branle la tête, on tape du pied, tout ce qu’on peut pour montrer notre appréciation.  Ils suent beaucoup plus que nous, mais le plaisir est mutuel.  Le son est parfait, puissant, mais clean, même pas besoin de bouchons.  

Une performance impeccable, j’en aurais pris encore. Un seul petit bémol technique lors de l’apparition d’Émilie Plamondon (PunkRoquette) sur scène, qui doit chanter quelques lignes avec le chanteur. Son micro ne fonctionne pas. Oups, dommage!

C’est aussi ça le LIVE. Assister à un show de cette énergie assis ce n’est pas l’idéal pour l’ambiance générale, mais j’avoue profiter de mon siège et de la vue. Pouvoir rentrer dans le show sans avoir peur de manger un coup de botte derrière la tête, j’haïs pas ça. Perspective différente à laquelle je pourrais bien prendre goût. 

BELVEDERE
Ce n’est pas un band que je connais, mais les avis étaient unanimes, définitivement un band à voir en show. Je ne tarde pas à comprendre pourquoi. Quel professionnalisme! Les voix sont justes, le son, toujours aussi clean, nous laisse apprécier pleinement chaque instrument. Les musiciens sont impressionnants, particulièrement le drummer.

En plus de jouer vite et fort, il chante et semble à peine essoufflé. Mélangé aux guitares très techniques, il se dégage une énergie incroyable.

J’ai de la chance d’être assise sur ma chaise, car s’il y avait eu un pit, je me serais fait décapiter dès les premières notes. Les musiciens semblent apprécier l’ambiance casino. Ils en font même des blagues. Ils jouent pour 50 personnes comme si on était 10 000 et ne cessent de nous remercier pour notre présence. 

La chance était pour nous d’avoir eu un show privé de cette qualité. Deux bands que je reverrais bien dans un festival avec des milliers de personnes qui chantent en chœur. C’est tout ce qui manquait aux performances de ce soir.

Sunday, September 26, 2021, my first show since October 2019. Going all this time without a show for me is torture. In a short while, I will finally be free of this weight, this unbearable lack.

During this forced break, I’ve been listening to the radio a lot, following the social networks, just to stay connected to the music scene. Tonight, on the program, two bands I’ve often heard about on PunkRockRadio.ca, but never seen, DEBT CEMETARY and BELVEDERE. The latter released their sixth album earlier this year, on Thousand Islands Record, entitled Hindsight Is The Sixth Sense. A band and an album greatly appreciated by the Quebec punk community, I wasn’t going to miss the chance to discover these bands LIVE. I am one of those who believe that there is nothing better to discover a band than to see them in the flesh, with the sound of the amps in the background.

We arrive at the Impérial Bell, a few minutes before the show starts. One of my favorite venues.  I’ve always found this place as a classy one. It’s even more true tonight with the pandemic configuration. A very intimate atmosphere, with those few tables carefully lined up at the right distance, lit by a small candle.  I feel like a special guest, a privileged one.  The calmness in the room makes me a little nostalgic.  I am not used to this kind of atmosphere.

Being a huge fan of fast and energetic punk, I’m in for a treat tonight. I’ve done my homework, listened to a few random songs, but you’re never prepared for that adrenaline rush that LIVE brings. But before that dose of punk rock energy, there’s the warm up.  The evening begins with an acoustic performance by American singer/guitarist WALT HAMBURGER.

He has the thankless task of setting the stage for the bands that follow. A doubly arduous task as the crowd consists of about fifty people sitting quietly on a chair.  Alone on the stage, he plays his songs and some covers with passion. It takes confidence to perform alone on stage. I really liked it.

Make way for DEBT CEMETARY! Much more lively and noisy with 5 musicians! Now we’re talking! The show starts! It’s loud, the band moves and jumps around, the stage is on fire! I was feeling bad for the bandsto have to deal with a big, almost empty room, but it doesn’t seem to bother them at all. They’re giving it all they’ve got. For us the fun is more from the inside. We shake our heads, stomp our feet, do whatever we can to show our appreciation. They sweat a lot more than we do, but the fun is mutual. The sound is perfect, powerful, but clean, no need for ear plugs.  

An impeccable performance, I would have had more. The only technical glitch was when Émilie Plamondon (PunkRoquette) appeared on stage to sing a few lines with the singer. Her mic didn’t work. Oops, too bad!

That’s also what LIVE is all about. Attending a show of this energy sitting down is not ideal for the general atmosphere, but I admit to enjoying my seat and the view.  Being able to walk into the show without fear of getting kicked in the back of the head, I don’t hate that. A different perspective that I might actually enjoy. 

BELVEDERE
It’s not a band I know, but the opinions were unanimous, definitely a band to see in show. It didn’t take me long to understand why.  What professionalism! The voices are right, the sound, always so clean, letting us fully appreciate each instrument. The musicians are impressive, especially the drummer.

In addition to playing fast and loud, he sings and seems barely out of breath. Mixed with the very technical guitars, it gives off an incredible energy.

I’m lucky I’m sitting in my chair, because if there had been a moshpit, I would have been decapitated at the first notes.  The musicians seem to enjoy the casino atmosphere. They even joke about it. They play for 50 people as if there were 10,000 of us and they keep thanking us for being there. 

We were lucky to have a private show of this quality. Two bands that I would see again at a festival with thousands of people singing along. That’s all that was missing from tonight’s performance.
