SWALLOW THE SUN + WILDERUN | 02.12.2021 | LA SOURCE DE LA MARTINIERE

Alors que commence le mois de décembre, je peux enfin assister à mon premier concert international.  Et avec la neige et le temps plus froid qui s’est installé, il n’y a pas de meilleur contexte pour profiter de nos voyageurs finlandais SWALLOW THE SUN. Après ma première rencontre avec eux, alors qu’ils ouvraient pour CHILDREN OF BODOM  en 2019, je trouve aujourd’hui très approprié de les revoir dans un lieu plus petit, leur métal atmosphérique étant très intime. 

Mais d’abord, ce soir, c’est le moment pour un autre groupe d’ouvrir, et cet allumage de la bougie a été donné à WILDERUN qui nous offre une deuxième visite depuis de nombreuses années. 

Ils ont interprété leur art avec un metal plus lourd que je m’attendais, n’ayant écouté que les albums, approchant une tonalité brumeuse – ceci étant ma perception, bien sûr! En live, chaque instrument résonnait bien et, s’il y avait des séquences, je ne les ai pas remarquées. Par contre, je crois que ça permet d’avoir une expérience différente, et je pouvais voir visiblement les gens ressentir la musique autour de moi.

  Malheureusement, Abigail Williams, qui était aussi à l’affiche, n’a pas pu traverser la frontière pour les dates canadiennes. Cela a toutefois permis à WILDERUN de nous donner plus de chansons et de renforcer le lien avec leurs (nouveaux) fans de Québec. 

Sur fond de vents hurlants, SWALLOW THE SUN a fait son chemin vers la scène dans une pièce rendue chaleureuse par la température et les spectateurs enthousiastes. Même si les expressions faciales semblaient froides, je pouvais sentir que le groupe agissait en phase avec sa musique parce que chaque membre ressentait et se déplaçait avec chaque harmonie. Ce qui venait renforcer l’ambiance plus nordique et mélancolique.

Mais encore une fois, comme WILDERUN, la musique semblait avoir plus d’énergie que la subtilité des albums, et les arrangements sonores étaient plus omniprésents.

Somme toute, ils sonnaient très bien et la voix de Mikko Kotamäki était puissante, en particulier pendant « Stone Wings », ma préférée, et le moment me donne encore la chair de poule. Cet homme pourrait chanter l’annuaire téléphonique et en faire une expérience émotionnelle.

J’aimerais ajouter qu’ils jouent presque tous les soirs dans une ville différente pour cette tournée, et que c’est une affirmation qu’ils aiment être sur scène et partager cette musique. 

Bref, Mère Nature a fait commencer l’hiver au moment le plus opportun avec une soirée de groupes de metal atmosphérique mémorables. Une lumière à se rappeler dans l’obscurité grandissante de la saison.

As we move into December, I can finally experience my first international concert. And now that the snow and the cold have settled, there is also no better moment to enjoy our Finnish travelers from SWALLOW THE SUN. After my first encounter with them, as they were opening for Children Of Bodom in 2019, I found it very fitting to meet again in a smaller venue, because their atmospheric metal feels very intimate. 

But first, tonight it’s time for another band to open, and that lighting of the candle was given to WILDERUN,who gifted us with a second visit after many years.

They set the mood with heavier metal than I expected, having only listened to previous recordings, bordering on the hazy side – this being my perception of course. As a live act, all instruments sounded fine, and if there were playbacks, I did not notice. I believe this gives a chance to experience their music differently and I could very well see the people feeling the music around me.

Unfortunately, Abigail Williams, also on the bill, could not cross the border for the Canadian dates. On the good side, this gave WILDERUN a chance to play more songs and strengthen the bond with their Quebec City (new) fans.  

To the sound of howling winds, SWALLOW THE SUN made their way towards the stage in a room made warm by the temperature and the eager crowd. Although the facial expressions seemed cold, I could sense that the band acted within the context of the music they play because all bandmates felt and moved to every harmony, which reinforced the northern ambiance of the melancholic side.

But, again, like WILDERUN, the live music seemed to convey more energy than the albums with their subtleties, and the playbacks were more present.

All in all, they all sounded very good and Mikko Kotamäki’s voice was powerful, especially during “Stone Wings”, my personal favorite, and the moment still gives me goosebumps. This man could recite the phonebook and make it an emotional experience.

I would like to add that they are playing almost every night in a different city for this tour – a strong statement about how they love being on stage and sharing their music. 

In the end, Mother Nature made the arrival of winter at the right time, for an evening of memorable atmospheric metal bands. A light to remember in the incessant obscurity of the season.
