ARCHITECTS – For Those That Wish To Exist – 26 février, 2021 (UK)

C’est mon voyage musical préféré de l’année. Il frappe exactement au bon endroit. Je suis en admiration de l’équilibre entre la lourdeur, l’électronique et la voix en colère, mais vulnérable de Sam Carter. Remettre en question le cœur même de votre existence et votre place dans la société en est le sujet principal. Aussi, le vinyle le plus cher que j’ai jamais acheté, mais il en vaut vraiment la peine.
This is my favourite musical journey of the year.It hits exactly in the right spot. I am in awe of the balance of heaviness, electronics and Sam Carter’s angered yet vulnerable voice. Questioning the very core of your existence and your place in society. Also, the most expensive Vinyl I ever bought but so worth it.

POWERWOLF – CALL OF THE WILD (Deutschland)

Je renommerais le genre « empower metal »! Mélodies accrocheuses, rythmes faciles, thème surnaturel. La geek en moi veut courir éternellement comme . . . une louve (jeu de mots intentionnel).  La version Deluxe que je possède comprend des reprises de leurs chansons par des amis du groupe, quelque chose que je trouve souvent chez les artistes européens et qui m’a permis de découvrir plein d’autres artistes. Le tout dans la bonne humeur. Ils sont mon « go-to » quand je veux échapper à la réalité pendant un certain temps.
I would rename the genre as Empower Metal! Catchy melodies, easy rhythms, supernatural theme. The geek in me wants to run endlessly like . . . a wolf (pun intended).  The deluxe version I own include cover of past Powerwolf songs by friends of the band, something I often find in European artists. All in good humor and spirit. They are my go-to when I want to escape reality for a while.

BEARTOOTH – Below – 25 juin 2021 (USA)

En parlant de démons, Below doit être sur cette liste. Ceux-ci sont très réels et le sentiment que vous n’êtes pas seul « 666 feet in my hell below » résonne des mois après sa relâche. Bien que très brut et lourd, je sens la tension sur de mes épaules se dénouer tout en écoutant. Ce sont mes thérapeutes préférés et aussi les moins chers.
Speaking of demons, Below needs to be on this list. Those demons are very real and feeling you are not alone “666 feet in my hell below” is resonated months after its release. Although very raw and heavy, I feel the tension on my shoulder lifting while listening. They are my favourite and cheapest therapists. 

SCARFOLD – We Shall Suffer – 25 septembre 2021 (Canada)

C’est ma (pas si) surprise de l’année. J’étais familier avec la musique hardcore de SCARFOLD avant, mais d’une manière ou d’une autre, ceci frappe fort. Il correspond à tout ce style new-yorkais de brutalité : chansons courtes (et album), à peine avoir le temps de respirer, punks en colère contre le monde. Un beau moment d’adrénaline !
This is my (not so) surprise of the year. I was familiar with Scarfold’s hardcore music before but somehow this hits hard. It fits with all that New York style of brutality: short songs (and album), barely have time to breath, angry punks against the world. A great adrenaline rush!

LANDMVRKS – LOST IN A WAVE- 19 mars 2021 (France)

Voici ce que j’appellerais : où la fluidité frappe le ventilateur ! Le titre le dit bien, vous vous faites porter (violemment) par leur mélange de hardcore, de metalcore et de rap en anglais et en français. Assez discuté ! Et envoyez-moi dans ce « pit »!
Here is what I would call where the fluidity hits the fan! The title says it well, you get carried (violently) by their mix of hardcore, metalcore and rap both in English and French. ‘nough said! And get me in this pit!

Quand on parle de la pièce maîtresse d’une discographie, Aphelion va être dur à battre. Cet album est une montagne russe émotionnelle. Si vous cherchez la perle rare qui vous fera frissonner en vous donnant les larmes aux yeux, ne cherchez pas plus loin. L’intensité vocale de Einar Solberg est la performance de l’année et la complexité musicale de leur prog unique permet de découvrir de nouvelles subtilités à chaque écoute. Album incontournable qui ne laissera personne indifférent!
Aphelion should be in the dictionary next to the definition of “masterpiece”. What an unbeatable album. An emotional roller coaster from front to back. If you’re looking for that special music that gives you goosebumps while it emotionally wrecks you, you’ve found it! Einar Solberg’s vocals win performance of the year, and the musical complexity of Leprous’ unique brand of prog lets you discover new subtleties with each listen. A crucial release for 2021.

IOTUNN – Access All Worlds – 26 février 2021 (Danemark)

Difficile de faire mieux comme premier long jeu, Iotunn sont passés maîtres de la première impression ! Un album impeccable où tous les éléments sont irréprochables : un chanteur à la voix excellente qui varie en style avec brio; des solos pas croyables; des riffs lourds et rythmés; un batteur à te jeter par terre par ses prouesses. Et que dire du concept et des paroles! Amateurs de science-fiction, embarquez à bord du Garganey pour un ultime voyage au fin fond de l’espace pour essayer de sauver ce qui reste de l’humanité. Les textes et l’ambiance de cette saga épique vont vous en faire voir des étoiles !
Iotunn served us all with a masterclass on how to make a stellar first impression. This is the debut album of the year. Every little detail here is impeccable; from show-stealer vocals that switch from one style to the other with practiced ease; to mind blowing solos; to rhythmic riffs that couldn’t get heavier; to a drummer that deeply impressed me with his technical prowess. Amateurs de black ‘n roll, voici votre prochain album préféré. Les légendaires Vreid sont de retour avec leur projet le plus ambitieux en carrière : Wild North West, l’album concept, le film, le concert dans les montagnes du Nord, tout y est ! Une œuvre tout feu tout flamme, agressive et passionnée; et en même temps glaciale et impitoyable comme les Norvégiens savent si bien le faire.
Black ‘n roll fans, thank me later, here’s your new favorite album! Vreid, like the absolute legends they are, are back with their most ambitious project yet. Wild North West isn’t just an brilliant concept album, oh no, it’s a whole movie, it’s the high mountains of the North, it has everything you need to scratch that black metal itch. A fire and ice album, aggressive and passionate, yet icy cold with that signature glacial chill the Norwegians do oh so well.

INSOMNIUM – Argent Moon – 17 septembre 2021 (Finlande)

En quatre chansons, Insomnium réussi à résumer leur identité : chaque morceau est juste assez distinct, juste assez classique. Reconnaissable dès la première note de guitare, réentendre du Insomnium, c’est comme revenir à la maison. Et l’EP est plein de surprises, de nouveautés, de petits risques pris en préparation pour le prochain album qui est dû en 2022. Ça met l’eau à la bouche !
In just four songs, Insomnium managed to give us a full summary of what makes them unique: each track is distinct yet classic and hits all the beats that make the band’s signature sound. Listening to new material from these guys feels like coming home, their sound is instantly recognizable. And the EP has little surprises, the band’s got new tricks up their sleeves and they tease us by taking risks in the song composition, just enough to make us excited for the new full length album slated for 2022. I’m hungry for more!

HATE – Rugia – 15 octobre 2021 (Pologne)

Trente ans d’activité dans l’univers black métal et Hate trouve encore moyen de se renouveler à chaque album et de perfectionner son art. Quel autre groupe peut se venter d’une telle chose ? Chaque musicien est ici au top de sa forme (surtout Nar-Sil à la batterie, je n’en reviens toujours pas de comment ce gars défonce sa batterie, c’est incroyable !). Je me dois de souligner la production d’une qualité hors pair, quel travail en studio et au mixage. Païens, amateurs d’histoire, venez vous inspirer d’un album quasi-spirituel et lourd en symbolisme.
Thirty years in the business of black metal and Hate still finds a way to renew themselves and perfect their craft. Name another band that sounds so fresh after such a lengthy career! Every member is on top of their game here (especially Nar-Sil on drums, I’m still not over how this guy absolutely obliterates his drum kit, my jaw’s on the floor when I watch him play.) Special mention to the clean and slick production, the mixing and mastering is spot on. Pagans, heathens, history fans, let yourselves be inspired by this album chock full of symbolism.

IMMINENCE – Heaven In Hiding – 26 novembre, 2021 (Suède)

Imminence est un groupe suédois de post-hardcore et de metalcore alternatif originaire de Trelleborg. Je les ai découvert totalement par hasard, j’avoue être musicalement éclectique et j’aime ce qui est différent. L’album Heaven in Hiding comporte des moments absolument époustouflants. Il est puissant et émotif, tout en équilibre sur du groove lourd, mais avec une sensibilité mélodique qui donne à l’album un ton fragile et humain. Une musique transcendante qui rappelle l’univers cinématographique, d’ailleurs leurs clips sont magnifiques. Un opus de titres où la fusion des éléments à cordes, de l’atmosphère cinématographique et des chants doux en font une expérience unique.
Imminence is a Swedish post-hardcore and alternative metalcore band from Trelleborg. I discovered them totally by chance, I admit to being musically eclectic and I like what is different. The album Heaven in Hiding has some absolutely breathtaking moments. It’s powerful and emotional, all balanced on heavy grooves, but with a melodic sensitivity that gives the album a fragile and human tone. A transcendent music that reminds the cinematographic universe, besides their clips are magnificent. An opus of tracks where the fusion of string elements, cinematic atmosphere and soft vocals make it a unique experience.

WHILE SHE SLEEPS – Sleeps Society – 16 avril, 2021 (UK)

Selon moi, l’un des meilleurs albums de l’année (ex-eaquo avec celui de Architects) pour nos gars de Sheffield, U.K. Dès le départ, j’ai été conquise, et ce, jusqu’à la toute fin où les gars remercie les fans, on les sent totalement sincères. D’ailleurs, ils vouent une réelle passion pour leurs fans. Cet album les met sur leur X, ils sont en pleine montée et aucune des pièces de l’album n’est de trop : c’est parfait et en totale cohésion. Tout y est : des riffs très lourds et percutants, des breakdowns donnant envie de sauter dans le  mosh pit, on y entend des éléments de nouveauté et c’est rafraîchissant, LOZ est au top vocalement et absolument déchaîné, les mélodies sont parfois profondes et émotives et boom ça te remonte en pleine gueule et tu souris et tu en veux toujours plus. C’est ça la drive de While She Sleeps: tu oublies tout, la musique te prend et tu t’y immerges sans retenue.
According to me one of the best albums of the year (ex-equo with Architects) for our guys from Sheffield, U.K. From the beginning I was conquered and this until the very end where the guys thank the fans, we feel them totally sincere. Moreover they have a real passion for them. This album puts them on their X, they are in full rise and no part of the album is too much: it’s perfect and in total cohesion. It’s all there: very heavy and punchy riffs, breakdowns that make you want to jump into the mosh pit, they add elements of novelty and it’s refreshing, LOZ is at the top vocally and absolutely unleashed, the melodies are sometimes deep and emotional and boom, it comes back to bite you in the ass and you smile and ask for more. That’s the drive of While She Sleeps: you forget everything, the music takes you and immerse yourself without restraint.

Je ne suis pas la spécialiste de Architects, je laisse la place à Amélie qui les as de tatoué sur le coeur depuis longtemps. Pour ma part, l’acte de séduction a commencé avec le très douloureux mais sublime Holy Hell, mais j’avoue qu’ils m’ont eu cette année avec cet album à dimension épique et orchestrale. Ceux qui me connaissent savent que je suis une fille de voix, c’est sur quoi je focus à la première écoute : qui peut décemment résister à Sam Carter? En plus, il y a des invités dont Winston McCall (Parkway Drive) et ses cris perçants sur la pièce Impermanence. Et pour me faire totalement fondre, ils refont plusieurs titres en version symphonique: je suis faite à l’os. Quand tu as le talent de ces gars-là, tu peux tout te permettre. Expérimenter la douceur malgré des textes qui déchire en fait partie sans oublier d’où vous venez, les tragédies que vous avez traversées, et ce qui fait de vous ce que vous êtes. Bravo les gars, pour moi, c’est un chef d’oeuvre.
I am not an expert of Architects. I hand up the keys to Amélie, who has them permanently tattooed on her heart. For me, the act of seduction began with the incredibly painful but sublime Holy Hell,they finally got me this year with their massive and orchestral album. I’m a voice girl, as anyone who knows me knows. That’s the first thing that comes to me when I listen an album: who can decently resist Sam Carter? Plus, there are guests, including Winston McCall (Parkway Drive) and his piercing screams on the track Impermanence. They also do some tracks in the symphonic version that completely melt my heart: they got me down to the bones. When you have the talent of these guys, you can do anything. Experiencing softness in spite of challenging lyrics is part of it without forgetting where you come from, the tragedies you’ve been through, and what makes you who you are.. Respect guys, for my part it’s a masterpiece.

BEARTOOTH – Below – 25 juin, 2021 (USA)

Une addition massive et lourde à une discographie déjà bien fournie. Below (tout au contraire de sa signification) se qualifie d’une qualité à un niveau supérieur et à tous les égards : puissant, rythmique et brut. Ma préférée, Devastation, déploie une grandiose énergie qui me détend comme un massage sur un lit de clous : détente & focus garantis. Je vous met au défi de me contredire quand j’affirme que le drum se joue désormais à un niveau jamais atteint : vous allez en prendre plein la tronche. Au final, l’album est un véritable mur de son.
A massive and heavy addition to an already extensive discography. Below (contrary to its meaning) qualifies as a quality on a higher level and in all aspects: powerful, rhythmic and raw. My favorite, Devastation, has a great energy that relaxes me like a massage on a bed of nails: relaxation & focus guaranteed. I dare you to contradict me when I say that the drum is next level: you’ll get a kick out of it. In the end the album is a real wall of sound.

TURNSTILE – Glow On – 27 août 2021 (USA)

Damn, quel album !! Que dire de plus de ce troisième album studio de Turnstile connu à l’origine comme un groupe de punk hardcore! Des accords puissants, des hooks de alt-rock, des percussions, mais aussi du beat box et même de lourds breakdowns funky latino ! Ça pue le groove et les riffs puissants. Un album de passion musicale qui me rend bien vivante et dans le moment présent. Sur ma « wish list » : les voir l’interpréter en « live », ouch, ça promet.
Damn, what an album! What more can be said about this third studio album of Turnstile originally known as a hardcore punk band! Powerful chords, alt-rock hooks, percussions but also beat box and even heavy latin funk breakdowns! It stinks of groove, powerful riffs. An album of musical passion that makes me feel alive and in the moment. On my wish list: to see them perform it live, ouch, can’t wait.

CROWN – The End of All Things – 16 avril 2021 (France)

Dense et atmosphérique comme une trame sonore de film, cet album me fait voyager dans un univers sombre et hypnotique. Il me rappelle l’effet provoqué par les albums de Massive Attack et de NIN. La voix de Stéphane me trouble avec sa riche profondeur malgré la froideur des mélodies, des riffs de guitares comme des westerns à gogo, et un beat régulier et lancinant. Mais détrompez-vous, car on est bel et bien sur du doom, du rock industriel, du post-metal. Un album très cohérent, bien construit et léché ; ça sent le génie musical derrière tout ça. En bref, mission accomplie.
Dense and atmospheric like a movie soundtrack, this album makes me travel in a dark and hypnotic universe. It reminds me of the effect caused by Massive Attack and NIN albums.
Stephane’s voice confuses me with its rich depth despite the coldness of the melodies, guitar riffs like westerns galore, and a steady, throbbing beat. But don’t be fooled because we are indeed on doom, industrial rock or even post-metal. A very coherent album, well constructed and polished; it feels the musical genius behind all that. In short, mission accomplished.
