EVERGREY + FRACTAL UNIVERSE + VIRTUAL SYMMETRY|L’OPIUM de DUBLIN|2022.09.21

Il n’y a pas de meilleur sentiment que celui de faire partie d’une communauté. Alors qu’une Canadienne en voyage en Irlande va voir EVERGREY de la Suède, FRACTAL UNIVERSE de la France et VIRTUAL SYMMETRY de l’Italie tout en fraternisant avec des fans d’aussi loin que le Brésil, l’Opium de Dublin devient alors notre maison. Tout cela au nom du métal. En partie par chance et en partie par logistique, c’était le seul arrêt en terre irlandaise de la tournée The Heartless Portrait de EVERGREY et ma seule journée de visite dans cette ville.

VIRTUAL SYMMETRY
Avant l’arrivée des têtes d’affiche, j’ai pu faire l’expérience de VIRTUAL SYMMETRY. Ne connaissant pas bien leur musique, j’ai eu la meilleure des occasions de voir (et d’entendre) ce qu’ils peuvent faire. Et j’ai été agréablement étonnée par les grandes mélodies, la haute énergie et les bonnes vibrations de leur performance.

Depuis leurs débuts en 2009, ils ont créé un métal mélodique accessible qui convenait bien à mes oreilles pas habituées au décalage horaire. La voix de Marco Pastorino s’équilibrait parfaitement avec la guitare de Valerio Villa et la basse d’Alessandro Poppale.

Tous soutenus, bien sûr, par le clavier de Mark Bravi et la batterie d’Alfonso Mocerin. Être le premier sur scène n’est pas toujours la meilleure position et les foules peuvent être difficiles parfois, mais ils ont assurément gagné une fan ce soir-là. 

FRACTAL UNIVERSE
Après un court remaniement de scène, j’ai fait la connaissance d’un autre groupe d’un autre pays : FRACTAL UNIVERSE.  De manière inattendue, ils sont arrivés avec une sonorité death metal alourdissant l’atmosphère, mais ces mecs français ont aussi livré une prestation très positive, avec de grands sourires derrière leurs cheveux longs et foncés.

Au début, je n’étais pas sûr de la place de ce type de musique sous le thème progressif du lineup. Mais après la première chanson, cette lourdeur semblait s’intégrer parfaitement dans cette expression d’émotions.

Leur ton plus sombre était bien positionné entre les deux groupes plus mélodiques. Alors que je profitais de leurs lourdes mélodies, le leader Vince Wilquin est arrivé avec un merveilleux solo de saxophone (oui, un saxophone!).

Allant même dans la foule pour la fin! Encore une fois, j’étais sur la voie d’une découverte sans savoir que j’en avais le besoin! 

EVERGREY
Enfin, EVERGREY est arrivé sur scène. Quel moment présent pour moi et mes quelques centaines de nouveaux amis. Après de nombreuses décennies et plus d’une douzaine d’albums, ils donnaient l’impression qu’ils étaient très à l’aise devant un parterre bondé. Avec une setlist bien conçue comprenant principalement des titres récents, ils ont cassé la baraque et ont facilement connecté avec l’entièreté de l’auditoire de l’Opium. Tom S. Englund a dirigé le reste de la soirée comme la chose la plus naturelle qui soit.

Avec un talent indéniable, Henrik Danhage, Rikard Zander, Jonas Ekdahl et Johan Niemann semblaient passer un bon moment aussi, se déplaçant sur scène et se souriant l’un l’autre. Je garderai de merveilleux souvenirs de ce spectacle. 

Des moments comme lorsque nous avons tous chanté sur « Midwinter Calls », l’une de mes pièces préférées, ou pendant « Call Of The Dark » lorsque tout le monde a levé le poing dans l’air en chantant le refrain, comme une séance de thérapie. 

J’ai quitté la salle avec un sentiment de bien-être dans mon cœur. En cette nuit spéciale que je ne pouvais pas manquer, au cours d’un voyage spécial. La musique rassemble vraiment les gens et même pour la dame antisociale que je suis, ce sentiment de communauté était vraiment réconfortant.

There is no better feeling that the one making you feel part of a community. When a traveling Canadian in Ireland goes to see Sweden’s EVERGREY, France’s FRACTAL UNIVERSE and Italy’s VIRTUAL SYMMETRY, while also chatting with fellow fans from as far as Brazil, the Opium felt like our home. All in the name of metal. Partly with luck and partly thanks to logistics, it was EVERGREY’s only stop in the land of the Irish for their “Heartless Portrait” tour and my only vacation day in the city.

VIRTUAL SYMMETRY
Before the headliners, I got to experience VIRTUAL SYMMETRY. Not familiar with their work, I had the best opportunity to see (and hear) what they can do.  And I was astonished by the great melodies, the high energy and the overall good vibes of their performance. Since their beginning in 2009, the band has worked to create an accessible kind of melodic metal that was well suited for my jet-lagged ears. Marco Pastorino’s vocals were easily balanced with Valerio Villa’s guitar and Alessandro Poppale’s bass. All of this, of course, with the support of Mark Bravi’s keys and Alfonso Mocerin’s drums. Being the first band on stage is not always the best setting, and crowds can be tough sometimes, but they sure gained a fan that night. 

FRACTAL UNIVERSE
After a brief stage changeover, I was introduced to another group from yet another country : FRACTAL UNIVERSE. Unexpectedly, they came in with a death metal sound that darkened the venue, but these French dudes very positively delivered, with big smiles behind their long black hair. At first, I wasn’t sure about the place of this genre in the progressive line-up. But somehow, after the first song, that heaviness seemed to fit right in this buildup of emotions. Their darker tone was on point, by being situated in between two melodic bands. While I was enjoying their heavy melodies, frontman Vince Wilquin came in with a wonderful saxophone solo (yes, a saxophone!). Even going into the crowd to finish that part! Again, I was on a discovery path that I didn’t know I needed!

EVERGREY
Finally, EVERGREY arrived on stage. What an fulfilling moment for me and my few hundreds of new friends. After many decades and more than a dozen releases, it felt like they were quite at ease in front of packed floor. With a well-crafted setlist that included mostly songs from recent albums, they rocked the place and connected easily with the entire audience of the Opium. Tom S. Englund led the rest of the evening in the most naturally way as possible. With undeniable talent, Henrik Danhage, Rikard Zander, Jonas Ekdahl and Johan Niemann seemed to have a great time also, pacing the stage and smiling to each other. I will keep wonderful memories from that show. Such as when we all sang along to ‘Midwinter Calls’, one of my favorite songs, or during « Call Of The Dark » when everybody had their fists in the air and were singing the chorus as if as a therapy. 

I left the venue with a feeling of well-being in my heart. It was a special night that I could not miss during a special trip. Music really brings people together and even for the antisocial lady that I am, this sense of community was really comforting.
