2 SHADOWS + DESCAPE + CHANGE MY BRAIN WITH CAKES + POLYGRAPH | LA SOURCE | 10.09.2023

Il fait encore beau et chaud, vivement le temps de profiter de la vie comme seuls les goths savent le faire… c’est-à-dire tard le soir dans le noir… Avec une grande joie bien dissimulée, je me suis donc pointée à La Source pour passer une belle soirée avec quatre groupes d’ici et d’un peu plus loin, de divers styles, dans le cadre de la tournée « Cold Inside » de 2 SHADOWS.

On commence avec POLYGRAPH, un groupe dont j’avais entendu parler sans le connaître vraiment. Je me trouve, encore une fois, agréablement surprise par ce que je vois et ce que j’entends. Deux chanteurs, beaucoup de cordes sur les guitares (toujours un signe que la musique sera un peu plus complexe et intéressante), et une appropriation de la scène bien maîtrisée.

On n’a pas trop le temps de souffler avec eux. Entre autres pièces jouées, « Disconnect », qui figurera sur leur album qui sortira ce 28 septembre, et « On The Edge », en cette Journée mondiale de prévention du suicide. Message d’intérêt public : parlez à quelqu’un si vous avez besoin d’aide svp, on ne le répétera jamais assez. 

CHANGE MY BRAIN WITH CAKES (CMBWC pour les fanatiques) prend le relais avec ses nouveaux costumes circassiens en rouge et blanc, et la même assurance et la même énergie sur scène que la première fois que je les ai vus. La bande a toutefois dû laisser partir son maître de piste, et le chanteur se démène de façon tout aussi hallucinée.

En fait, c’est Cindy la bassiste qui se démène le plus. Non seulement elle a l’air d’halluciner, mais elle a aussi l’air dérangée, donnant tout ce qu’elle a, suant sang et eau pour son art. À voir.

Le groupe mise, ce soir, sur ses nouvelles pièces comme « Nursing Curse » pour faire sauter la baraque, mais je trouve que c’est « Act of Violence » qui déménage le plus. Bref, le genre de groupe qui pourrait faire la première partie d’AVATAR.

Ensuite, c’est DESCAPE qui finit par remplir la salle avec ses fans. Dans un style un peu plus accessible, le quatuor a en effet déjà ses fans, qui sont bien présents et connaissent les paroles de leur album You Had It All But It Fell Apart, sorti il y a un mois environ et comprenant les titres « Bleed » et la chanson-titre en deux parties. Encore une fois on voit que le groupe semble être un habitué de la scène, et donne tout ce qu’il a, en complicité avec le public.

Chose surprenante, il n’y a pas de bassiste, mais encore plus surprenant, c’est que je ne remarque pas cette absence sonore… En tout cas, s’il y avait une présence à remarquer, c’est celle de la grand-maman du chanteur, entre autres membres de la famille. Toujours touchant de voir cet appui des proches!

On finit avec 2 SHADOWS, le groupe qui m’intéressait surtout. Pour ceux qui ne connaissent pas, ce groupe de Vancouver s’est surtout fait connaître pour ses sketches sur Instagram de « goths in ungothly places », où on voit Glen et Tryst « s’amuser » à des endroits inhabituels pour eux – manèges, McDo, terrain de golf. Auparavant deux, ils sont passés à quatre musiciens pour pouvoir faire des shows (mais sans bassiste eux aussi), et c’était donc leur première fois à Québec, avec leurs fans les accueillant gaiement et chaleureusement (oui oui). La scène est décorée comme il se doit, avec pieds de micro garnis de crânes, clôture de cimetière devant la batterie, éclairage bleuté, et quatre petites plateformes assez proches du plafond merci. Le visuel est là, l’énergie est là, l’attitude aussi, ils sont charmants, vraiment.

Côté instrumental c’est fort (un peu trop) et lourd, mais côté vocal, ce n’est pas à la hauteur de ce qu’on entend en studio – je dois dire que c’est à perfectionner en live. La seule chose qui me déçoit réellement, c’est la courte prestation. Elle aura duré moins longtemps que celle de POLYGRAPH, avec 7-8 chansons, leurs seules jusqu’à présent, dont la récente « Fading From Misery », et deux reprises (« Boulevard of Broken Dreams » de Green Day et « Here To Stay » de Korn).

Enfin, aussi à souligner est la collaboration entre les musiciens, lorsque Christopher de POLYGRAPH a accompagné CMBWC, et que Dominic de DESCAPE a chanté avec 2 SHADOWS.

Je vais parler comme une matante ici, mais je trouve ça beau à voir! Et j’ai passé une bonne soirée. Quatre groupes à découvrir!

The weather is still fine and warm, and it’s high time to enjoy life as only goths know how… that is, late at night and in the dark… So, with great, well-concealed joy, I showed up at La Source to spend a lovely evening with four local and not-so-local bands of various styles, as part of 2 SHADOWS’ The Cold Inside Tour.

Let’s start with POLYGRAPH, a band I’d heard of without having listened to their music yet. Once again, I’m pleasantly surprised by what I see and hear. Two singers, lots of guitar strings (always a sign that the music will be a little more complex and interesting), and a well-mastered appropriation of the stage. There’s not much time to breathe with them. From the setlist was was « Disconnect », which will feature on their album to be released this September 28th, and « On The Edge », on this World Suicide Prevention Day. PSA: Please talk to someone if you need help, we cannot repeat it often enough. 

CHANGE MY BRAIN WITH CAKES (CMBWC for fanatics) then take over with their new circus-themed costumes in red and white, and the same confidence and energy on stage as the first time I saw them. The band had to let its ringmaster go, however, and the singer is acting just as demented. Well, to be fair, it’s Cindy the bassist who’s doing the most. Not only does she look like she’s hallucinating, she also looks deranged, giving everything she’s got, sweating blood and sweat for her art. A must-see. Tonight, the band relies on new songs like « Nursing Curse » to get the crowd going, but I think it’s « Act of Violence » that does it best. In short, the kind of band that could open for AVATAR.

It’s now DESCAPE‘s turn to fill the room with their fans. In a slightly more accessible style, the quartet already have their fans, who are all ears and eager, and familiar with the lyrics of their album You Had It All But It Fell Apart, released about a month ago and featuring the tracks « Bleed » and the two-part title track. Once again, it’s clear that the band are regulars on stage, giving their all in complicity with the audience. Surprisingly, there’s no bassist, but even more surprisingly, I don’t notice this absence of sound… In any case, if there was one presence worth noting, it was that of the singer’s grandmother, among other family members. It’s always touching to see such support from loved ones!

The night ends with 2 SHADOWS, the band I was most interested in. For those who don’t know, this Vancouver band became best known for their « goths in ungothly places » Instagram sketches, where Glen and Tryst are seen « having fun » in places that are unusual for them – amusement park, McDonald’s, golf course. From being two at first, the band grew to four to be able to play shows (but without a bassist either), so this was their first time in Quebec City, with their fans welcoming them cheerfully and warmly (yes, yes). The stage is decorated as it should be, with skull-trimmed microphone stands, a cemetery fence in front of the drums, bluish lighting, and four small platforms fairly close to the ceiling, thank you. The visuals are there, the energy is there, the attitude too, they’re charming, really. On the instrumental side, it’s loud (a little too loud) and heavy, but on the vocal side, it’s not up to par with what’s on record – I have to say there’s room for improvement when it comes to live shows. The only thing that I find really disappointing is the short performance. It didn’t even last as long as POLYGRAPH’s, with 7-8 songs, their only ones so far, including the recent « Fading From Misery », and two covers (« Boulevard of Broken Dreams » by Green Day and « Here To Stay » by Korn).

Finally, also worth mentioning is the collaboration between the musicians, when Christopher from POLYGRAPH went with CMBWC, and Dominic from DESCAPE sang with 2 SHADOWS (see photos above). I’m going to sound like an auntie, but I think it’s a beautiful thing to see! And I had a great time. Four bands to get to know for sure!
