AVATAR + ORBIT CULTURE + THE NATIVE HOWL | IMPÉRIAL BELL | 12.09.2023

Bien que j’aime presque tous les styles de musique, depuis un moment j’écoute principalement du punk et hardcore. Sans raison particulière, j’ai un peu délaissé le metal. Alors quand Med m’a proposé de l’accompagner pour couvrir le concert de Québec de la tournée AVATAR : Chimp Mosh Pit Tour, je n’avais aucune idée de ce que j’allais voir. Je vous confirme que je suis plus qu’heureuse d’avoir dit oui !

THE NATIVE HOWL 
J’ai découvert un (pas si) nouveau genre musical avec le groupe THE NATIVE HOWL. Ils ont su jumeler à la perfection le thrash metal et le bluegrass, pour en faire du thrash Grass. Le mariage des genres est étonnant et j’adore.

Les trois instrumentistes à cordes performent aussi au chant. Leurs trois voix se marient à la perfection lorsqu’ils chantent en harmonie. THE NATIVE HOWL a su me donner des frissons.

Pour ce concert, le batteur habituel était remplacé par une batteuse dont l’identité reste inconnue.

Cette dernière donnait sa première représentation avec le groupe mais on n’y aurait vu que du feu si Alex Holycross ne l’avait pas mentionné. Chapeau et bienvenue dans ma playlist!

ORBIT CULTURE
À voir le nombre de personnes portant leurs t-shirts, le groupe originaire de Suède était vraiment attendu des métalleux présents dans la salle. ORBIT CULTURE, qui joue un death metal mélodique d’une excellente qualité, a soulevé la foule avant même la première note. Christopher est entré seul sur une scène peu éclairée. Il n’a eu qu’à lever une baguette pour que le public dans la salle se mette à crier, siffler, applaudir.

Ensuite, les autres membres du groupe ont fait leur entrée. ORBIT CULTURE navigue avec brio entre les riffs à la fois mélodiques et lourds, et les riffs plus rapides, très techniques. Le “double kick” du batteur, Christopher, est vraiment rapide. Le chanteur, Niklas, a une belle voix grave et puissante.

Et on a pu deviner la complicité de Richard (guitare solo) et Frederik (basse), alors qu’ils jouaient et bougeaient souvent en synchronicité. 

AVATAR
Le groupe AVATAR, tout comme ORBIT CULTURE, est un groupe de death metal mélodique originaire de Suède. Mais ce qui les démarque de tous les autres groupes du genre, c’est leur sens du spectacle. Avant d’aller les voir, je me suis un peu renseignée sur le groupe et ça a réellement attisé ma curiosité. Ils se qualifient eux-même de groupe de cirque metal. Et ils ont un style plutôt éclectique, avec des influences bien senties de heavy metal, d’industriel ou encore de groove.

AVATAR a fait une entrée sur scène théatrale, alors que les guitaristes et bassiste sont apparus en file, style militaire, suivis du batteur.

Ce dernier, secondé d’un “roadie” cagoulé, leur a chacun remis leur instrument de façon formelle avant d’aller à son tour s’installer derrièrs son drum. Après quelques notes, le chanteur est à son tour arrivé. Il est à fond dans son personnage et n’en décroche jamais. Il m’a fait pensé à un Alice Cooper version clown déjanté.

La foule a chanté en choeur dès le deuxième morceau. AVATAR sait s’approprier la scène. On voit qu’ils ont du plaisir à jouer même avec la mise en scène et les chorégraphies.

Les décors, les costumes, le jeu, tout contribue à nous embarquer dans leur délire. 

Et attention, tous ces flaflas ne sont pas là pour cacher un manque de talent. Au contraire, les riffs mélodiques sont de qualité et les parties lourdes sont très efficaces.

Le public en redemandait sans cesse. Assez que le groupe n’a pas pu se résoudre à arrêter à l’heure prévue. Ils nous ont choyés en prolongeant de presque une heure supplémentaire au grand plaisir de tous. AVATAR est un groupe qu’on se doit de voir au moins une fois.

Une autre belle soirée passée à L’Impérial. Qui soit dit en passant était plein à craquer, même à la mezzanine.

Although I like almost all styles of music, for a while now I’ve been listening mainly to punk and hardcore. For no particular reason, I’ve kind of put metal aside. So when Med asked me to join her to cover the Quebec City concert of the AVATAR: Chimp Mosh Pit Tour, I had no idea what I was in for. I can now confirm I’m more than glad I said yes!

THE NATIVE HOWL 
I discovered a (not so) new musical genre with the band THE NATIVE HOWL. They’ve managed to combine thrash metal and bluegrass to perfection, to make something like “thrash grass”. The marriage of genres is astonishing, and I love it. The three string players also perform on vocals. Their three voices blend perfectly when they sing in harmony. THE NATIVE HOWL gave me the shivers. For this concert, the usual drummer was replaced by a female drummer whose identity remains unknown. The newcomer was performing with the band for the first time, but it would have been a sight to behold if Alex Holycross hadn’t mentioned her. Well done and welcome to my playlist!

ORBIT CULTURE
Judging by the number of people wearing their T-shirts, this band from Sweden was eagerly awaited by the metalheads in the room. ORBIT CULTURE, with their melodic death metal of the highest quality, had the crowd on their feet even before the first note. Drummer Christopher entered the darkly lit stage alone. All he had to do was raise a drumstick, and the audience began shouting, whistling and clapping. Then the rest of the band made their entrance. ORBIT CULTURE navigates brilliantly between heavy, melodic riffs and faster, highly technical ones. Christopher’s « double kick » is really fast. The singer, Niklas, has a deep, powerful voice. And we could feel the complicity of Richard (lead guitar) and Frederik (bass), as they often played and moved in synchronicity. 

AVATAR
Like ORBIT CULTURE, AVATAR is a melodic deth metal band from Sweden. But what sets them apart from all the other bands of the genre is their sense of showmanship. Before going to see them, I did a bit of research and it really piqued my curiosity. They call themselves a metal circus band. And they have a rather eclectic style, with strong influences from heavy metal, industrial and groove.

AVATAR made a theatrical entrance on stage, as the guitarists and bassist appeared in military style parade, followed by the drummer. He, assisted by a hooded « roadie », formally handed over the instruments before taking his turn behind his drum. After a few notes, the singer appeared. He’s totally in character and never lets go. He reminded me of a crazy clown version of Alice Cooper. The crowd was already singing along during the second song. AVATAR know how to own the stage. You can tell they’re having fun even with all the staging and choreography. The sets, the costumes, the acting – everything contributes to drawing us into their craziness. 

And don’t be fooled: all that flaunting isn’t to hide a lack of talent. On the contrary, the melodic riffs are top-notch and the heavy parts are highly effective. The audience kept coming back for more. Enough that the band couldn’t bring themselves to stop at the scheduled time. They rewarded us with almost an extra hour, much to everyone’s delight. AVATAR is a band you’ve got to see at least once.

Another great evening at the Impérial. Which, incidentally, was packed to the rafters, even at the mezzanine level.
