PANTERA + LAMB OF GOD + S.N.A.F.U. | CENTRE VIDEOTRON | 27.02.2024

Les avis sont divergents face à la formation actuelle de Pantera. En effet, certains ont tendance à dire que sans les frères Abbott, Dimebag Darrel et Vinnie Paul, membres fondateurs et le coeur de la formation d’origine, le groupe n’a plus de raison d’être. D’autres vont prendre la défense du chanteur Phil Anselmo ainsi que du bassiste Rex Brown, affirmant qu’il y a des changements dans tous les groupes de toute façon. Voici donc une petite précision : cette tournée, intitulée « Pour les fans, pour les frères, pour l’héritage », se veut être un hommage aux frères Abbott et non la « réactivation » du groupe. Et malgré la controverse entourant principalement Phil Anselmo, cet hommage a su rassembler des fans venant des deux camps. 

S.N.A.F.U.
Originaire de Detroit, Michigan, c’est le groupe de hardcore trash punk S.N.A.F.U. qui a ouvert devant un Centre Vidéotron presque vide, alors que la foule entrait en un flux régulier et constant. Qu’à cela ne tienne, ils ont tout donné et nous ont présenté une musique aux influences variées telles le trash metal, le grind et même un peu de hardcore.

Bien que j’ai apprécié la majorité des pièces présentées, j’ai trouvé une certaine redondance. Il manquait cette petite touche de variété qui pourrait les démarquer.

LAMB OF GOD
La formation de Virginie nous rendait visite pour la 2e fois en peu de temps, puisqu’ils étaient de la programmation du FEQ 2023. La set list était très similaire à celle de l’été dernier, mais on s’en fiche parce que c’était de la bombe. Suite à une entrée fracassante sur Memento Mori, l’énergie du groupe, leur prestance et la précision du batteur Art Cruz étaient sans égale mesure.

Et les fans ont reçu cette énergie avec enthousiasme.

Les circle pits  s’enchainaient et grandissaient de plus en plus et ce, jusqu’à la fin, où Randy Blythe a dédié Redneck aux frères Abbott avant de quitter la scène. Une prestation frôlant la perfection. À quand la tournée où ils seront à nouveau la tête d’affiche? 

PANTERA
Comme je l’ai mentionné en introduction, cette tournée se voulait un hommage aux frères Abbott, membres fondateurs du groupe PANTERA. La barre était haute pour les musiciens qui allaient les remplacer, Zakk Wylde et Charlie Benante. Il faut dire que les deux musiciens ont côtoyé le groupe et ont connu les frères Abbott. Ils ont su leur rendre hommage en reprenant leur œuvre sans tenter de les personnifier. Dès le début, l’émotion était au rendez-vous, puisque nous avons eu droit à un montage d’extraits vidéo de l’époque où tout le groupe était réuni avant que le grand rideau portant le nom de PANTERA ne tombe et que les musiciens entament A new level. 

Entre chaque morceau ou presque, on avait droit à une histoire ou quelques mots de Phil Anselmo. Il nous a entre autres raconté qu’une fois, ils ont joué en première partie de Metallica. Tout au long de leur prestation, personne ne savait qui ils étaient jusqu’à ce qu’ils entament les premières notes de Walk (Vidéo par MED), pièce mythique de PANTERA. Pour marquer le coup, tous les membres de S.N.A.F.U. et de LAMB OF GOD sont montés chanter en choeur en en bonus deux roadies se sont mis à danser joyeusement sur le stage! Et pour leur donner raison, tout le monde s’est mis à chanter à tue-tête les paroles de la célèbre chanson.

À quelques reprises, on a pu remarquer que les années difficiles ont eu un impact sur la voix d’Anselmo : par exemple dans certaines pièces où les notes montent plus dans les aigus. Mais il réussissait à donner le change en descendant d’un ton, ou encore en faisant participer le public. 

Le bassiste, Rex Brown, nous a donné l’impression de n’avoir jamais arrêté de jouer du PANTERA.

Zakk Wylde s’approprie la musique et joue les solos à sa façon. Ce n’est pas Dimebag, mais en même temps c’est ok, puisque c’est un hommage au génie créatif du défunt guitariste et non une copie.

Celui qui m’a surprise, c’est Charlie Benante et son rythme d’une précision quasi chirurgicale, à l’image de Vinnie Paul.

On n’a eu droit qu’à des hits ou presque, tels que Mouth for War, I’m Broken, 5 Minutes Alone, This Love, Walk ou encore Cowboys From Hell. C’est pendant la pièce Floods que l’émotion était à son comble, alors que des images des frères Abbott étaient projetées sur les écrans géants. 

Les trois groupes nous ont donné d’excellentes performances pour ce concert, qui se voulait un hommage à l’oeuvre des frères Abbott et également un rappel que les métalleux sont tous des frères et sont là pour s’entraider.

Opinions are divided on Pantera’s current line-up. Indeed, some tend to say that without the Abbott brothers, Dimebag Darrel and Vinnie Paul, founding members and the heart of the original line-up, the band no longer has a raison d’être. Others will come to the defense of singer Phil Anselmo and bassist Rex Brown, claiming that there are changes in every band anyway. So, here’s a little clarification: this tour, entitled « For the Fans, For the Brothers, For the Legacy », is intended as a tribute to the Abbott brothers, not the « reactivation » of the band. And despite the controversy surrounding Phil Anselmo particularly, this tribute brought together fans from both camps. 

S.N.A.F.U.
Hailing from Detroit, Michigan, hardcore trash punk band S.N.A.F.U. opened in front of an almost empty Videotron Center, as the crowd entered in a steady, constant stream. No matter, they gave it their all and presented us with music with varied influences such as trash metal, grind and even a bit of hardcore. Although I enjoyed most of the pieces presented, I did find a certain redundancy. They lacked that little touch of variety that could set them apart.

LAMB OF GOD
This band from Virginia visited us for the 2nd time in a short space of time, as they were part of the FEQ 2023 program. The set list was very similar to last summer’s, but we didn’t care because it was a blast. Following a smashing entrance on Memento Mori, the band’s energy, their presence and the precision of drummer Art Cruz were without equal. And the fans received this energy with enthusiasm. The circle pits grew and grew, right up to the end, when Randy Blythe dedicated Redneck to the Abbott brothers before leaving the stage. A performance bordering on perfection. When will they headline another tour? 

PANTERA
As I mentioned in my introduction, this tour was a tribute to the Abbott brothers, founding members of PANTERA. The bar was set high for the musicians who would replace them, Zakk Wylde and Charlie Benante. It must be said that the 2 musicians knew the band and the Abbott brothers. They paid tribute to them by covering their work without trying to personify them. Right from the start, the emotion was there, as we were treated to a montage of video extracts from the time when the whole band was together, before the big canvas bearing the PANTERA name fell and the musicians began A new level. 

Between almost every track, we were treated to a story or a few words from Phil Anselmo. Among other things, he told us that they once opened for Metallica. Throughout their set, no one knew who they were until they hit the first notes of PANTERA‘s legendary Walk (video by MED). And to prove them right, everyone started singing the lyrics at the top of their lungs. To mark the occasion, all the members of S.N.A.F.U. and LAMB OF GOD came up to sing in chorus, and as a bonus, two roadies started dancing wildly on the stage! On a few occasions, it became clear that the difficult years had had an impact on Anselmo’s voice. For example, in some of the pieces, where the notes rise more in the treble. But he managed to give the change by dropping a tone, or by involving the audience. 

Bassist Rex Brown gave us the impression of never having stopped playing PANTERA. Zakk Wylde makes the music his own and plays the solos his own way. It’s not Dimebag, but at the same time it’s okay, since it’s a tribute to the late guitarist’s creative genius, not a copy. The one who surprised me was Charlie Benante and his almost surgical-precision rhythm, in the image of Vinnie Paul. We were treated to nothing but hits, such as Mouth for War, I’m Broken, 5 Minutes Alone, This Love, Walk and Cowboys From Hell. It was during Floods that the emotion was at its peak, as images of the Abbott brothers were projected onto the giant screens. 

All three bands gave excellent performances for this concert, which was intended as a tribute to the work of the Abbott brothers, and as a reminder that metal heads are all brothers and are there to help each other.
