THE OFFSPRING + SIMPLE PLAN | CENTRE VIDÉOTRON | 05.11.2022

En cette chaude soirée de novembre, les Chicks se sont rendues au Centre Vidéotron pour vous. Au programme, deux groupes pour qui les preuves ne sont plus à faire, c’est-à-dire SIMPLE PLAN et THE OFFSPRING. Les gens étaient au rendez-vous à un point tel que l’équipe a dû reconfigurer la scène pour débloquer des billets supplémentaires. Il y avait près de 10 000 personnes au Centre Videotron samedi soir. Une foule de tous âges visiblement excitée pour cette soirée.

C’est SIMPLE PLAN qui fait son entrée pour débuter la soirée sur la musique thème de Star Wars. Le groupe commence ensuite son set avec le classique « I’d Do Anything » de son premier album qui a 20 ans cette année.

C’est avec une énergie contagieuse que les gars enchaînent leurs plus grand succès, notamment « Jet Lag »chanté avec la belle Claudia Bouvette. Personne n’est assis dans les gradins, tout le monde chante en cœur avec le groupe, les bras dans les airs et dansant.

Pierre surprend les fans en autographiant un des ballons de plage géants durant la chanson « Summer Paradise », qu’il lance ensuite dans la foule à un chanceux qui saura l’attraper et le garder. N’ayant pas vu SIMPLE PLAN en spectacle depuis 2019, je suis surprise de voir que le groupe n’a pas remplacé David Desrosiers, ancien bassiste de la bande. Ils se sont plutôt adaptés à quatre.

Il y aussi Charles Comeau aux drums qui fait le grand saut dans la foule, surfant sur les fans pendant que Pierre prend sa place avec Sébastien et Jeff qui continuent la chanson « I’m Just A Kid ». On peut dire que le quatuor a réussi sa mission de réchauffer la foule en une heure pour la tête d’affiche de la soirée, THE OFFSPRING.

Je ne peux pas ne pas vous parler de l’intermède, qui était très divertissant. On peut dire que les fans qui étaient là savent s’amuser. Il y a eu des apparitions à la « fuck you cam », « kiss cam », « headbang cam », « dance fucker cam » et « mosh cam ». On a beaucoup ri à voir les gens se donner autant, c’était très drôle. Mention d’honneur à Champion, la mascotte des REMPARTS de Québec, qui s’est donné à fond pour l’occasion.

THE OFFSPRING fait son entrée avec nulle autre que « Come Out And Play » pour bien débuter. L’énergie est contagieuse, la foule est visiblement ravie et le groupe aussi. Pendant le spectacle, on peut voir un ballon dirigeable (drone) tout illuminé en vert, portant le symbole de OFFSPRING, qui se promène en filmant la foule. L’éclairage est hallucinant, coloré et hypnotique, on voit aussi passer toutes sortes d’images de clowns douteux, d’avions et de manga pendant la prestation. La foule chante, danse et en réclame toujours plus au groupe américain qui semble apprécier la soirée autant que les fans. Il y a un moment émouvant lorsque Dexter s’installe au piano pour nous jouer « Gone Away ». Le groupe termine son set en remerciant chaleureusement la foule et en jouant leurs plus gros hits comme « Pretty Fly », « Kids Aren’t Alright » et « Self Esteem », pour au total final un gros 1h30 de musique. Et de quitter sous les cris et applaudissements de gens très ravis de leur soirée.*

On this warm November evening, the Chicks went to the Centre Vidéotron for you. On the program, two bands for whom the proof is in the pudding, namely SIMPLE PLAN and THE OFFSPRING. The crowd was so big that the team had to reconfigure the stage to get extra tickets. There were close to 10,000 people at the Videotron Center on Saturday night. A crowd of all ages visibly excited for this evening.

It’s SIMPLE PLAN that makes its entrance to start the evening on the music theme of Star Wars. The band then starts their set with the classic « I’d Do Anything » from their first album which is 20 years old this year. With an infectious energy, the guys play their greatest hits, including « Jet Lag » sung with the beautiful Claudia Bouvette. No one is sitting in the stands, everyone is singing along with the band, arms in the air and dancing.

Pierre surprises fans by autographing one of the giant beach balls during the song « Summer Paradise, » which he then tosses into the crowd to some lucky person who can catch and hold it. Having not seen SIMPLE PLAN perform since 2019, I was surprised to see that the band did not replace David Desrosiers, the band’s former bassist. Instead, they have adapted to four. There’s also Charles Comeau on drums who does the big jump into the crowd, crowd surfing while Pierre takes his place with Sebastien and Jeff continuing the song « I’m Just A Kid ». You could say that the quartet succeeded in their mission to warm up the crowd in one hour for the headliner of the night, THE OFFSPRING.

I can’t tell you about the intermission, which was very entertaining. You can tell that the fans who were there know how to have fun. There were a « fuck you cam », a « kiss cam », a « headbang cam », a « dance fucker cam » and a « mosh cam » appearances. We laughed a lot to see people giving themselves so much, it was very funny. Special mention to Champion, the mascot of the Quebec City REMPARTS hockey team, who gave his all for the occasion.

THE OFFSPRING made its entrance with none other than « Come Out And Play » to start things off. The energy was contagious, the crowd visibly delighted and so is the band. During the show, we can see a blimp (drone) all lit up in green, bearing the OFFSPRING symbol, flying around filming the crowd. The lighting is hallucinating, colorful and hypnotic, we also see all kinds of images of dubious clowns, planes and manga during the performance. The crowd sings, dances and asks for more from the American band who seems to enjoy the evening as much as the fans. There is a touching moment when Dexter takes the piano to play « Gone Away ». The band ends their set by thanking the crowd and playing their biggest hits like « Pretty Fly », « Kids Aren’t Alright » and « Self Esteem », for a total of 1h30 of music. And to leave under the shouts and applause of people very delighted with their evening.*
