HATEBREED + DESPISED ICON + VADER + LUTHER + DROP OUT COLD | ENVOL & MACADAM – 29e ÉDITION – QUÉBEC | 11.09.2026

Vendredi à ENVOL ET MACADAM, la subtilité était optionnelle: death metal, hardcore et autres formes de violence sonore étaient sur la ligne de front. Le festival a sorti l’artillerie lourde : DROP OUT COLD, LUTHER, VADER, DESPISED ICON et HATEBREED se sont relayés pour transformer les abords du fleuve en véritable champ de bataille sonore.

DROP OUT COLD a lancé les hostilité et plante immédiatement le décor avec un hardcore lourd et nerveux. Peu importe que certains spectateurs découvrent encore le groupe : les riffs font rapidement leur travail et les premiers mouvements de foule apparaissent. Le groove est là, les breakdowns aussi, et l’Agora commence doucement à prendre des airs de pit.

C’est au tour de LUTHER d’injecter une dose supplémentaire de noirceur dans la programmation. La formation allemande est issue de Planetrox Europe 2026. Et là, changement de dimension. Leur approche navigue entre black, death, metal progressif et sonorités modernes, avec une palette vocale particulièrement agressive. Une découverte qui rappelle pourquoi ENVOL ET MACADAM demeure intéressant : entre les « monuments » internationaux, le festival laisse de l’espace à des groupes capables de surprendre.

Mais la véritable mutation de la soirée commence avec VADER. Trente-cinq ans de carrière et toujours aucune raison de croire que Piotr Wiwczarek ait l’intention de lever le pied. Le death metal polonais est présenté dans sa forme la plus fonctionnelle : riffs acérés, batterie en mode bombardement et une exécution suffisamment précise pour rappeler que la brutalité n’exclut pas la discipline.

DESPISED ICON prend ensuite le relais. Le groupe québécois n’a pas inventé le deathcore, mais il sait parfaitement pourquoi ce style fonctionne en concert : construire la tension, laisser respirer une seconde, puis écraser la salle sous un breakdown. Le pit fait le reste.

À 21 h 30, HATEBREED ferme le programme de l’Agora. Pas besoin de réinventer la roue lorsque celle-ci est déjà montée sur des chenilles. Le groupe de Jamey Jasta déroule son hardcore métallique avec cette efficacité presque industrielle qui a fait sa réputation : riffs simples mais massifs, batterie sans temps mort et slogans taillés pour être repris par une foule entière.

Mais le vendredi n’était pas terminé. Il fallait encore descendre dans le ventre de Québec.

L’ANTI BAR & SPECTACLES prend le relais à 23 h avec TRASH PANDA avec leur son très doux: deathgrind et brutal death metal.

À minuit, FLESHCRAWL ramène le death metal vers ses fondamentaux : brutal, direct, sans compromis. Puis arrive 1 h, lorsque la plupart des gens raisonnables auraient déjà commencé à chercher leur lit..mais ils n’étaient manifestement pas la clientèle ciblée.

JUNGLE ROT prend le plein contrôle de L’Anti et ramène le death metal à quelque chose de plus viscéral : des riffs lourds, groovy et corrosifs, une énergie punk dans l’attitude et cette brutalité sans fioritures qui caractérise le groupe depuis ses débuts dans les années 90.

Cette programmation avait quelque chose de presque pervers dans sa construction : commencer par le hardcore, traverser le death metal et le deathcore, passer par HATEBREED, puis continuer la destruction jusqu’à une heure du matin avec des vétérans du death metal underground.

ENVOL ET MACADAM n’a pas seulement programmé une soirée metal. Il a construit un parcours. Et vendredi, ce parcours menait inexorablement vers le pit.

On Friday at ENVOL ET MACADAM, subtlety was optional: death metal, hardcore, and other forms of sonic violence took center stage. The festival brought out the heavy artillery: DROP OUT COLD, LUTHER, VADER, DESPISED ICON, and HATEBREED took turns transforming the riverfront into a veritable battlefield of sound.

DROP OUT COLD kicked off the hostilities and immediately set the tone with heavy, high-energy hardcore. It didn’t matter that some in the crowd were hearing the band for the first time: the riffs quickly did their job, and the first signs of a mosh pit began to appear. The groove is there, the breakdowns too, and the Agora slowly begins to take on the feel of a mosh pit.

It’s LUTHER’s turn to inject an extra dose of darkness into the lineup. The German band hails from Planetrox Europe 2026. And here, it’s a whole new level. Their sound navigates between black metal, death metal, progressive metal, and modern sounds, with a particularly aggressive vocal style. A discovery that reminds us why ENVOL ET MACADAM remains so compelling: among the international heavyweights, the festival leaves room for bands capable of surprising us.

But the real turning point of the evening begins with VADER. Thirty-five years into their career, and still no reason to believe that Piotr Wiwczarek has any intention of slowing down. Polish death metal is presented in its most effective form: razor-sharp riffs, drumming that feels like a bombardment, and a performance precise enough to remind us that brutality doesn’t preclude discipline.

DESPISED ICON takes the stage next. The Quebec band didn’t invent deathcore, but they know exactly why this style works live: build tension, let the crowd catch its breath for a second, then crush the venue with a breakdown. The mosh pit does the rest.

At 9:30 p.m., HATEBREED closes out the lineup at the Agora. No need to reinvent the wheel when it’s already mounted on tracks. Jamey Jasta’s band unleashes its metal-infused hardcore with the almost industrial efficiency that has made its reputation: simple yet massive riffs, nonstop drumming, and chants tailor-made to be sung along by the entire crowd.

But Friday wasn’t over yet. We still had to head down into the heart of Quebec City.

The ANTI BAR & SPECTACLES takes over at 11 p.m. with TRASH PANDA and their so soft deathgrind/brutal death metal.

At midnight, FLESHCRAWL brings death metal back to its roots: brutal, direct, uncompromising. Then it hit 1 a.m., when most sensible people would have already started heading to bed… but they clearly weren’t the target audience.

JUNGLE ROT takes full control of L’Anti and brings death metal back to something more visceral: heavy, groovy, and corrosive riffs, a punk energy in their attitude, and that no-frills brutality that has characterized the band since its beginnings in the ’90s.

There was something almost perverse about the way this lineup was put together: starting with hardcore, moving through death metal and deathcore, featuring HATEBREED, and then continuing the mayhem until 1 a.m. with veterans of the underground death metal scene.

ENVOL ET MACADAM didn’t just put together a metal night. They crafted a journey. And on Friday, that journey led inexorably to the mosh pit.
