POWERWOLF + SEVEN KINGDOMS
| MTELUS | 2023.02.24

After years of waiting, finally the Metal Mass came to Northern America with an exclusive stop in Montreal. Announced as a sold out show within only 5 days, last fall, to say that the ticket holders (including me) were impatient is an understatement! But with all of their years of musical experience under their evangelical belt, we were “in good paws” with these wolves. And to celebrate this « holy » night, POWERWOLF were helped by power metal friends SEVEN KINGDOMS.

SEVEN KINGDOMS
Opening such an evening can be overwhelming for a band that has not been in town for at least 13 years (according to them), but they were welcomed with loud cheers and made many fans, including me, that night. Sabrina’s voice was clear, melodic and quite strong. And with Keith on drums, and Kevin and Camden on guitars, it sounded great. With gratitude and positive energy, they performed a mix of the greatest hits for 45 minutes.
Finally, one could not miss the resemblance with our own Unleash The Archers, even with a completely different musical signature.

POWERWOLF
These German « priest »s blessed and possessed the willing crowd. Created in 2003, the band has built a concept around catholic imagery enveloped in gothic fantasy. And contrary to their big European productions, we saw what seemed to be a more laidback setting. But nothing dull: the iconic werewolf in the background, the evangelical costumes in shreds and, of course, the distinctive make-up. The pyrotechnics were replaced by the fired up audience, who did not shy away from praying on their knees during “Stossgebet” or rowing during “Sainted By The Storm” and jumping for other songs. Efficiently introduced in both French and English by singer Attila Dorn and keyboarder Falk Maria Schlegel, it’s “Beast of Gévaudan” (in French indeed) that made this night different from the others shows of this nano tour. In the end, it’s the live rendition of “Let There Be Night” that gave me the most goosebumps as Dorn’s tenor vocals took center stage. Even without “Panic in the Pentagram”, they managed to turn metal into a religion.

As this incredible night came to an end, I was wondering how soon I would again have the opportunity to raise my blood-filled chalice…
