ENVOL ET MACADAM | RANCID + AGNOSTIC FRONT + BIG D ABD THE KIDS TABLE + MAP + DON’T TRY + CRACHAT…et en bonus THE PROWLERS | 15.09.2023

Après une presque nuit blanche, on recommence aujourd’hui. Deuxième journée du festival et j’ai appris de mes erreurs. Cette fois, je mange un bon sandwich préparé par mon mari juste avant d’entrer sur le site. J’ai pensé à l’argent liquide pour mes churros, dont je rêve depuis hier.  Aujourd’hui, pour moi c’est le grand jour. Deux de mes groupes préférés terminent la soirée, RANCID et THE PROWLERS. L’excitation est à son comble.

Déjà sur le site, MED notre photographe nous raconte en images le passage des musiciennes du band CRACHAT qui avait la tâche de chauffer le stage.

Et moi, pour débuter ma journée, un band hardcore : DON’T TRY.   

Je n’écoute jamais ce style à la maison, parce que quand j’écoute de la musique c’est surtout pour chanter et disons que c’est loin de mon registre. Par contre, je suis toujours partante pour une prestation « live ». J’embarque facilement dans l’ambiance. Cette belle ambiance amicale de clan. Le chanteur nous accueille d’ailleurs chaleureusement!

Le son est excellent. Un son pesant, dur, mais super mélodique en même temps. Comme ils sont « high energy » sur scène, ils s’attendent à ce que ce soit pareil pour nous. Je veux bien, mais on n’est pas tous aussi en forme qu’eux. Je ne peux malheureusement pas sauter, mais je peux hocher la tête.

MAP 
Le retour d’un vieux band franco très apprécié de la scène locale. Je profite de leur prestation assise confortablement sur les chaises pour ménager mes forces. L’Agora, je répète, est un endroit magnifique. Ça fait changement de la garnotte de l’Îlot Fleurie et c’est idéal pour les vieux fans comme nous, qui peine à passer deux jours debout. 

Je connais une chanson, Chacun pour soi – « Nous autres on crève, tout le monde s’en sacre. On a la chienne en tabarnak… » que je peux chanter.

AGNOSTIC FRONT
Un band légendaire de New York hardcore, que je n’écoute pas personnellement, mais ils sont au top et leur performance est parfaite.

Le son est bon, mais je perds facilement les mots de Roger, le  lead vocal. Par contre on entend très bien la foule chanter chaque mot.

Stigma, le guitariste, se promène et vient souvent nous voir, même dans le coin où je suis. Il nous salue avec son magnifique sourire et sa guitare qu’il lève dans les airs.

Éthique hardcore oblige, il nous offre un show intense, énergique, mais en retour il nous demande de faire pareil, de se donner comme eux le font. Encore cette obsession de nous faire sauter. J’aimerais pouvoir sauter aussi, mais mes os me le défendent.

Là où je suis c’est tranquille. Je suis décalée à l’extrémité droite de la scène avec une vue parfaite. Devant moi, une petite demoiselle d’environ 3 ans fait dodo dans les bras de sa maman. Et oui, elle fait dodo en première rangée d’un show d’AGNOSTIC FRONT! Faut le faire quand même. Elle est mignonne, mais je plains la pauvre maman qui doit supporter le poids d’un enfant endormi durant tout le spectacle. Il faut vraiment être passionnée. Elle se réveille, juste avant le début de la prestation de RANCID. Elle aimerait quitter mais maman réussit à la convaincre de rester un peu, question de pouvoir profiter du spectacle de RANCID.

Un de mes bands préférés depuis 1995 – j’en ai vu des shows depuis.  Le dernier date d’il y a trop longtemps, je suis plus que due. J’ai toujours passé un bon moment et je sens que le spectacle de ce soir sera inoubliable! Ils commencent le spectacle en force avec Roots Radicals, un incontournable. 

Radio, Tenderloin, Maxwell Murder, Journey to the End of the East Bay, Black and Blue. À chaque nouvelle chanson, je suis aux anges. Que de vieux hits! Beaucoup de chansons des trois premiers albums, qui sont de loin mes préférées. Aucun temps mort, pas de blabla. Tout le monde semble en pleine forme! Même Tim Armstrong, semble rajeuni, avec sa casquette ! 

Je profite du moment présent comme jamais. Les frissons pis tout. Tout est parfait! Le son est malade! J’imagine que c’est pour ménager les voisins de l’Agora, mais le son n’est pas fort contrairement aux autres festivals et shows qui nous cassent les oreilles. On entend bien chaque instrument. Tim a même ouvert sa guitare. Il a plus l’air d’un musicien que d’un mime pour une fois et ça s’entend. L’intensité est à son top. Un petit moment plus calme pendant East Bay Night, mais pas assez pour faire tomber l’énergie. On entend beaucoup la foule chanter,  presque plus que le chanteur. On se croirait presque à un show de Taylor Swift. Je ne veux pas que ça finisse, mais toute bonne chose a une fin. Ils terminent évidemment par Ruby Soho.   

Je n’en crois pas encore mes oreilles. Un setlist incroyable, qui correspond en tout point à mes goûts. Un setlist Oi, idéal pour ouvrir pour les PROWLERS. Je me dis que j’ai sûrement rêvé, car c’est un de mes groupes préférés, mais tous ceux à qui je parle ont les mêmes commentaires que moi. Décidément, mon deuxième show préféré de RANCID après celui du Rockfest 2015 où ils ont joué …And Out Come The Wolves au complet.

Je prends le temps de me calmer avant de quitter l’Agora. En fait, on nous montre gentiment la sortie. J’ai l’intention d’aller voir THE HACKED, groupe punk de Québec aux Espaces Dalhousie. Depuis le temps que je veux les voir. En arrivant sur place, ça fait la file dehors. On va manquer de temps. On décide de partir tout de suite pour Limoilou et le bar Le Quartier de Lune.

Clou de ma soirée, de mon festival, THE PROWLERS. Band Oi de Montréal, que j’adore. J’ai assisté à un bon nombre de leurs spectacles depuis 2016 et je ne me tanne jamais. C’est le genre de band que tu sais que ça va être solide, autant dans le son que la performance des musiciens. Le Quartier de Lune n’est vraiment pas l’endroit idéal pour un show de ce style. Il n’y a pas vraiment de pit. La scène est au milieu de la salle, entre les tables et le bar, on doit constamment se tasser pour laisser passer les gens, c’est dérangeant. C’est plus un bar de beuverie entre amis que de spectacle. Bien que les deux peuvent souvent aller de pair, je ne m’attendais pas à ça. Si je réussis à fermer les yeux, ou faire abstraction de toutes les distractions, je peux mieux apprécier la musique et c’est pour ça que je suis ici, la musique.  Sur ce point, je ne suis pas déçue. 

Il est presque 3h lorsqu’on quitte le bar. Je ne veux pas aller me coucher, je veux prolonger le moment le plus longtemps possible. Une deuxième nuit blanche assurée pour moi. Toute la journée, je me remest en boucle les vidéos que j’ai filmées, en chantant le poing en l’air dans mon salon.

Une autre édition d’ENVOL ET MACADAM qui se termine. Une totale réussite sur toute la ligne.

After an all-nighter, we’re back at it today. Second day of the festival and I’ve learned from my mistakes. This time, just before entering the site, I eat a good sandwich made by my husband. I thought about bringing cash for my churros, which I’ve been dreaming about since the day before. Today is the big day for me. Two of my favorite bands end the evening, RANCID and THE PROWLERS. Excitement is running high. 

Already on site, MED, our photographer, tells us in pictures the performance of the band CRACHAT, who had the task of warming up the course.

For my part, to start the day, a hardcore band: DON’T TRY.   

I never listen to this style at home, because when I do listen to music, it’s mostly for singing, and let’s just say it’s way out of my league. On the other hand, I’m always up for a live performance. It’s easy to get into the mood. The friendly clan atmosphere.   The singer gives us a warm welcome!

« Bienvenue chez vous mes Tabarnak! » (« Welcome home, my Muthafuckas!)

The sound is excellent. A heavy, hard sound, but super melodic at the same time. As they’re giving high energy on stage, they expect the same of us. I don’t mind, but we’re not all as fit as they are. Unfortunately, I can’t jump, but I can headbang a bit.

MAP 
The return of an old “franco” band much appreciated on the local scene. I enjoy their performance sitting comfortably on the chairs to spare my strength. The Agora, I repeat, is a magnificent venue. It’s a welcome change from the dirt and grit of the Îlot Fleurie, and it’s ideal for old fans like us, who struggle to get through two days on their feet. I know a song, “Chacun pour soi” – « Nous autres on crève, tout le monde s’en sacre. On a la chienne en tabarnak… » that I can sing. (Loose translation: “we’re dying, no one gives a damn. We’re scared as shit”)

AGNOSTIC FRONT
A legendary New-York hardcore band, that I don’t personally listen to, but they’re in top form and their performance is perfect. The sound is good, but I can’t easily catch the words of Roger, the lead vocalist. On the other hand, you can hear the crowd singing along to every word.

Stigma, on guitar, goes for walks and often comes to see us, even in the corner where I am. He greets us with his beautiful smile and his guitar that he raises in the air.

As per hardcore ethics, he’s giving us an intense, energetic show, but in return he asks us to do the same, to give as much as they do. Again, this obsession with making us jump.  I wish I could jump too, but my bones won’t let me.

It’s quiet where I am. I’m offset to the far right of the stage with a perfect view. In front of me, a little girl of about 3 years old is sleeping in her mom’s arms. Yes, she’s sleeping front row at an AGNOSTIC FRONT show! I’m as surprised as you are! She’s cute, but I feel sorry for the poor mom who has to bear the weight of a sleeping child for the whole show. You really have to be passionate. She wakes up, just before RANCID‘s performance begins. She’d like to leave, but Mom convinces her to stay a while, so she can enjoy RANCID’s show. 

One of my favorite bands since 1995, I’ve seen a lot of shows since then. The last one was too long ago, I’m more than due. I’ve always had a good time, and I have a feeling that tonight’s show will be unforgettable! They kick off the show with “Roots Radicals”, a must-see.

“Radio”, “Tenderloin”, “Maxwell Murder”, “Journey to the End of the East Bay”, “Black and Blue”. With each new song, I’m ecstatic. So many old hits! Lots of songs from the first three albums, which are by far my favorites. No downtime, no blah blah. Everyone seems to be in top form! Even Tim Armstrong looks younger in his cap! 

I’m enjoying the moment like never before.  Chills and all. Everything is perfect!  The sound is sick! I guess it’s to spare the Agora’s neighbors, but the sound isn’t loud, unlike other festivals and shows that are deafening. You can hear every instrument. Tim has even opened his guitar up. For once, he sounds more like a musician than a mime, and you can hear it. The intensity is at its peak. A little quieter moment during “East Bay Night”, but not enough to bring down the energy. You can hear the crowd singing along, almost more than the singer. It’s almost like being at a Taylor Swift concert. I don’t want it to end, but all good things must come to an end. They finish, of course, with “Ruby Soho”.

I still can’t believe my ears. An incredible setlist that suits my tastes in every way. An Oi setlist, an ideal introduction to THE PROWLERS. I tell myself I must have been dreaming, because this is one of my favorite bands, but everyone I talk to says the same. Decidedly, my second favorite Rancid show after the one at Rockfest 2015 where they played “…And Out Come The Wolves” in its entirety.

I take the time to calm down before leaving the Agora. In fact, we’re kindly shown the way out. I’m planning to see THE HACKED, a punk band from Quebec City, at Les Espaces Dalhousie. I’ve been wanting to see them for ages. When I get there, there’s a long line outside. We’re running out of time. We decide to head straight for Limoilou and the Quartier de Lune bar.

The highlight of my evening, my festival, THE PROWLERS – an Oi band from Montreal that I adore. I’ve been to quite a few of their shows since 2016, and I never get bored. They’re the kind of band you know is going to be solid, both in sound and musicianship. Le Quartier de Lune really isn’t the ideal place for a show of this genre. There’s no real pit. The stage is in the middle of the venue, between the tables and the bar, and you’re constantly having to squeeze back to let people through. It’s more of a bar for drinking with friends than for performing. Although the two can often go hand in hand, I wasn’t expecting this. If I can close my eyes, or ignore all the distractions, I can better appreciate the music and that’s why I’m here, the music.  On that score, I’m not disappointed. 

It’s almost 3 a.m. when we leave the bar. I don’t want to go to bed, I want to make the moment last as long as possible. A second all-nighter for me. All day long, I replay the videos I filmed, singing with my fist in the air in my living room.

Another edition of ENVOL ET MACADAM comes to an end.  A complete success all round!
