SAMEDI 4 JUIN – JOUR 1

AVERTISSEMENT! Ce texte n’est aucunement objectif. C’est seulement le compte rendu d’une passionnée de punk rock. Un hommage à cet incroyable festival et à notre magnifique communauté punk rock. 

Aujourd’hui, les spectacles débutent à 13h.  Les prévisions d’averses et d’orages sont toujours en vigueur, mais pour l’instant, il fait beau et chaud.  On part tôt pour ne pas manquer les premiers spectacles. Le line up de la journée ne laisse aucun répit. Une autre journée de fou nous attend !     

FASTER FORWARD, FOURTH IN LINE, HITCH & GO, MUCH THE SAME, MUTE en replacement CRAIG’S BROTHER, JUGHEAD REVENGE, SATANIC SURFERS, VOODOO GLOW SKULLS et LESS THAN JAKE. 

Cette fois, on ne se casse pas la tête, on prend une seule voiture. On utilise notre passe « staff » pour l’accès au stationnement à l’entrée du site. Les routes sont déjà pleines de voitures. Beaucoup de festivaliers sont déjà sur place. Plusieurs semblent en pleine forme, mais pour certains, il est évident qu’ils ont abusé de l’alcool la nuit dernière.

Pour commencer la journée, FASTER FORWARD. (30 minutes). Loud and Fast, fast, fast skate-punk trio de Quebec. Pour les avoir déjà vu, il y a quelques mois, dans un bar de Lévis, j’ai spécifié à tous mes amis de ne pas manquer ce band. Première prestation de la journée, le spot ingrat d’un festival.  Les bands d’ouverture du « lendemain » ont la dure tâche de réveiller des punks qui ont eu une nuit courte et arrosée. 

Ma collègue de CHICKS ROCK MEDIA (Joanie) et moi, sommes devant, prête pour leur rapide et agressif skate punk. Le son est parfait, un bonbon auditif et visuel. Je ne me tanne pas de les regarder jouer. Ça l’air si facile. La première fois que je les ai vu, j’avais été impressionné par leur talent de musiciens, (un drummer qui chante, c’est toujours ahurissant), mais cette fois je peux plus apprécier les mélodies, les harmonies vocales. 30 minutes intenses, une intro énergique, un boost pour la folle journée qui nous attend.  

Pour animer la foule, lors des changements de band, il y a des combats de lutte. 

Pourquoi pas ! C’est une première pour moi. Je suis curieuse et je ne suis pas la seule.  Ça semble amuser les gens.  La mise en scène est parfaite, le présentateur avec son look « big shot » me fait bien rire.  

14h20 FOURTH IN LINE nous en mets plein les oreilles de leurs punk hardcore californien. Eric Bootow de JUGHEAD’S REVENGE est venu leur prêter main forte à la basse.

15h10. Avec quelques minutes de retard sur l’horaire, c’est le tour des chouchous de Québec,  HITCH AND GO.

Un band très apprécié de la scène locale, qui viennent de lancer un album (2022) sur le label québécois; PEOPLE OF PUNK ROCK. Grace à leur musique mélodique de qualité et leur grande présence sur les réseaux sociaux, ils attirent une belle foule de supporteurs partout où ils vont.

Ce ne sont pas les avertissements d’orages violents, qui vont les décourager. Pour l’instant on s’en tire plutôt bien, seulement quelques nuages ici et là. Le son me semble de plus en plus fort, la foule se densifie.  Le site est rempli de gens heureux, adultes et enfants. 

Je profite de leur musique énergique aux influences pop-punk, pour me créer des besoins aux tables de merch. J’ai oublié mes vestes à la maison, la météo bipolaire, me force à m’équiper. Je me choisie un « hoodie » de NO FUN AT ALL. Je n’ai pas porté de hoodie depuis le secondaire! Le confort total.  Je ne bois pas, je peux me permettre d’encourager les bands et le festival.  

15h30, il fallait s’y attendre, il pleut.  On part s’abriter à la voiture, mais le temps de s’y rendre, le soleil revient déjà. J’en profite quand même pour prendre une petite collation et on retourne sur le site. Cette averse de quelques minutes me rappelle que je ferais mieux de trainer mon kit de pluie jusqu’à la fin de la journée.  

De retour sur le site pour le band de skate punk mélodique de Chicago MUCH THE SAME. Une autre découverte pour moi.  Je connais, de nom, de par punkrockradio.ca, mais je ne connais pas leur musique. 

Plusieurs collaborations surprises dont une qui me plait particulièrement, celle d’Émilie Plamondon.  Punkroquette. Une artiste talentueuse, (chanteuse, musicienne, animatrice de radio, de podcast etc) de Québec, qui n’a plus besoin de présentation dans la communauté.  Elle prête sa douce voix, pour une chanson, j’ai des frissons instantanément. Le mélange de voix est parfait! J’adore les duos. 

Quelle belle prestation, quelle belle journée!   On a de la chance!  Une copine vient de me texter et c’est l’apocalypse à Québec, le vent, la grosse pluie et LA GRELE.  C’est le temps de prier pour que cet orage ne vienne pas jusqu’ici.  Pour l’instant, profitons du beau temps pour MUTE.

Un autre band de Québec, qui n’a plus besoin de présentation. Band très actif, qui font des tournées internationales.  Ils reviennent justement d’une tournée en Amérique du Sud.  Ils ont accepté, à la dernière minute de remplacer, CRAIG’S BROTHER, qui ont dû annuler leur prestation.  Comme pour tous les changements, il y a des heureux et des déçus. Je ne connais pas CRAIG’S BROTHER, mais j’ai entendu beaucoup de bons commentaires sur MUTE.  

On ressent leur expérience de scène.  Ils savent animer une foule. Le drummer, qui chante la majorité des leads vocals, parle beaucoup à la foule.  Il lâche même un  « Êtes-vous prêt tabarnak !!? » 

Déjà 18h! Désolé, mais avec un line up aussi top, on doit faire des choix et des sacrifices. On a beau être passionné de musique, on reste des humains avec des besoins naturels. J’ai faim, je manque donc le set entier de JUGHEAD’S REVENGE.  

SATANIC SURFERS
Je connais le band de réputation seulement, mais ceux qui me connaissent savent que j’ai une petite obsession sur les bands suédois et leur musique. Tout comme NO FUN AT ALL, la setlist est simple. Ils jouent l’intégral de l’album « Hero of Our time ». J’adore ces concepts. Ça a l’effet de nous replonger dans le temps, où on écoutait en boucle les albums en entier. 

Je m’approche du stage avec l’intention de me trouver une place définitive pour les trois prochains shows.  Première rangée, pour ne rien manquer du spectacle, mais surtout de l’ambiance.  J’ai de la chance, il reste de la place à la « gate ». Je suis au cœur de l’action. Je garderai cette place, au péril de ma vie, jusqu’à la fin du festival. Rien de moins que mon endroit préféré dans la vie, « front row » dans un festival punk rock.  La foule se rassemble près du stage. Une belle grosse gang de nostalgiques, prêts à vivre un moment inoubliable. Nous ne sommes pas déçus. Prestation sans faille.

Une belle connexion entre le band et la foule. Le bassiste nous raconte des histoires, question de reposer un peu le drummer.

Je m’attendais à de quoi de bien, mais pas à entrer autant dans le spectacle. Mon coup de cœur de la fin de semaine.  

20h20 VOODOO GLOW SKULLS
Grandiose! Ils donnent tout un spectacle, autant visuel que musical. Le chanteur est masqué, déguisé.

Une mise en scène originale qui ajoute une touche de folie.

La foule est intense. On a droit à de beaux gros pit festif. Pour certains et certaines, l’intensité et l’alcool ne font pas bon ménage. Une intruse a réussi à se faire une place entre mon mari et moi. Je respecte les gens qui ont du plaisir, qui crient et bougent, mais y’en a toujours un ou une pour dépasser les limites, en tout cas les miennes. Dans un état second, ma nouvelle voisine est intense, elle a tellement de mal à contenir sa joie, qu’elle crie, même et surtout quand ce n’est pas le temps. J’ai peu de patience en général pour ce genre de comportement, mais je reste positive. Elle semble vraiment être une fan de VOODOO, elle devrait quitter après leur set. 

A peine la prestation de VOODOO GLOW SKULLS terminée, que l’orage éclate. Malgré le retrait de l’alerte météo, on n’y échappe pas. Sans avertissement, le ciel nous tombe sur la tête. La grosse pluie, le vent et la grêle. En quelques secondes, le site se remplit d’eau.

Plusieurs courent se mettre à l’abri, cherchant désespérément un endroit couvert pour s’abriter tandis que d’autres, qui ont le sens du timing, profitent d’un passage dans les toilettes chimiques pour y rester cacher. 

Moiet un millier d’autres fans « hardcore », restons sous la pluie et la grêle espérant que ça ne durera pas longtemps. Je ne peux pas partir maintenant.  J’ai une place de choix, je ne peux la quitter, depuis le temps que j’attends. Protégé par nos ponchos, on tente d’être positifs, de se convaincre que ce n’est qu’un petit orage. Je ne veux pas croire que je ne verrai pas LESS THAN JAKE aujourd’hui. Rej Laplanche nous encourage et nous demande d’être patient. 

On n’attend pas longtemps, tout le stock est remis en place, la scène est épongée , le spectacle a enfin lieu.

LESS THAN JAKE
Mon band préféré depuis toujours (1998).  Mon gros coup de cœur du Vans Warped Tour 1998. Depuis ce temps, je n’ai jamais arrêté de les aimer et de les suivre. Je n’ai que des éloges à faire de ce band. Un des groupes que j’ai vu le plus souvent live et je retombe en amour à chaque fois.  Que ce soit sur une grosse scène intérieure, extérieure, une petite scène, je ne suis jamais déçu. Leurs spectacles sont toujours impeccables. Tout y est: l’énergie, l’intensité. Le site est dévasté, mais la foule est revenue en force.

Une fois dans ma bulle, plus rien ne compte. C’est mon moment, du pur bonheur, des milliers de voix pour chanter avec moi ! Je connais toutes les paroles par cœur et je n’en manque aucune.    

1h30 de LESS THAN JAKE !  Par contre, j’avais oublié qu’il en passait une demie à parler.  Malgré tout le respect que j’ai pour Chris, criss qu’il radote.

Je n’ai pas envie d’entendre parler du système de santé, quand je vais voir un show de ska, supposé me rendre festive et me faire danser. J’aime les bands qui ont une belle interaction avec leur audience, qui racontent quelques anecdotes, mais il faut jouer des chansons aussi!  Ça me fait un peu décrocher, mais ça les amuse, alors pourquoi pas ? Ils aiment bien taquiner les fans et les « humilier » avec humour. Normalement, ils font monter les « vieux » sur scène le temps d’une chanson (mon mari a déjà été l’une de leurs victimes en 2014 au warped tour Montréal). Cette fois la proie idéale, Anne-Marie, « la crowd surfeuse».

Chris et Roger trouvent très drôle l’idée de faire du « crowd surfing » ENTRE les chansons. 

« Vous êtes bizarre au Canada.  Faire du « crowd surfing » entre les chansons … mais pourquoi ? »

J’espère qu’elle ne se sauvait pas pour un besoin pressant, car elle doit maintenant rester sur la scène et danser pendant toute la chanson.

Le spectacle se termine par la chanson, « Ghost of me and you » et la belle voix de Roger.

Les musiciens quittent la scène sous les cris de la foule. Le drummer s’approche de nous, je le remarque à peine. J’applaudie avec tout le monde quand je vois un objet volant dans ma direction. Par réflexe, je lève le bras et sa baguette atterrit dans ma main.  Quel beau souvenir !!!  

J’ai déjà hâte à l’an prochain.

SATURDAY JUNE 4 – DAY 2

WARNING! This text is in no way objective. It is only the report of a punk rock fan. A tribute to this incredible festival and to our wonderful punk rock community.

Today, the shows start at 1pm.  The forecast of showers and thunderstorms is still in effect, but for the moment it is nice and warm.  We leave early not to miss the first shows. The line up of the day does not leave any respite. Another day of madness awaits us!    

FASTER FORWARD, FOURTH IN LINE, HITCH & GO, MUCH THE SAME, MUTE in place of CRAIG’S BROTHER, JUGHEAD REVENGE, SATANIC SURFERS, VOODOO GLOW SKULLS andLESS THAN JAKE.

This time, we do not break the head, we take only one car. We use our pass « staff » for the access to the parking at the entrance of the site. The roads are already full of car. Many festival-goers are already on the spot. Several seem in good shape, but for some, it is obvious that they abused alcohol last night.

To start the day, FASTER FORWARD. (30 min)
Loud and Fast, fast, fast skate-punk trio from Quebec. Having seen them a few months ago in a bar in Levis, I told all my friends not to miss this band. First show of the day, the ungrateful spot of a festival.  The opening bands of the « next day » have the hard task of waking up punks who have had a short and drunken night. 

My CHICKS ROCK MEDIA’s colleague (Joanie) and I are up front, ready for their fast and aggressive skate-punk. The sound is perfect, aural and visual candy.  I don’t mind watching them play. It looks so easy. The first time I saw them, I was impressed by their musical talent, (a drummer singing is always impressive), but this time I can appreciate more, the melodies, the vocal harmonies. 30 intense minutes, an energetic intro, a boost for the crazy day ahead.  

To animate the crowd, during the band changes, there are wrestling matches.  Why not! This is a first for me. I’m curious and I’m not the only one.  People seem to enjoy it.  The staging is perfect, the presenter with his « big shot » look makes me laugh.  

14h20 FOURTH IN LINE blow us away with their Californian hardcore punk. Eric Bootow from JUGHEAD’S REVENGE came to help them on bass.

With a few minutes delay on the schedule, it’s the turn of the darlings of Quebec, HITCH AND GO. A band very much appreciated by the local scene, they have just released an album (2022) on the Quebec City label, People of punk rock. Thanks to their quality melodic music and their great presence on social networks, they attract a nice crowd of supporters everywhere they go. The warnings of violent storms will not discourage them. So far we’re doing pretty well, only a few clouds here and there. The sound seems to me more and more strong, the crowd becomes denser.  The site is filled with happy people, adults and children.  I take advantage of their energetic music with pop-punk influences, to create my needs at the merch tables.  I forgot my jackets at home, the bipolar weather, forces me to equip myself.   I choose a « hoodie » from No fun at all.  I haven’t worn a hoodie since high school! Total comfort.  I don’t drink, I can afford to cheer on the bands and the festival.  

3:30 pm, It was to be expected, it rains.  We leave to take shelter in the car, but the time to go there, the sun returns already. I take advantage of it anyway to take a small snack and we return on the site. This shower of some minutes reminds me that I had better drag my kit of rain until the end of the day.  

Back on site for the melodic skate punk band from Chicago MUCH THE SAME. Another discovery for me.  I know them by name, from punkrockradio.ca, but I don’t know their music. 

Several surprise collaborations including one that I particularly like, that of Émilie Plamondon.  Punkroquette. A talented artist, (singer, musician, radio host, podcast etc) from Quebec City, who needs no introduction in the community.  She lends her sweet voice, for a song, I have instant chills.  The mix of voices is perfect! I love duets.  What a great performance, what a great day!   We are lucky!  A friend just texted me and it’s the apocalypse in Quebec City, the wind, the heavy rain, and THE HELL.  It’s time to pray that this storm doesn’t come here.  For now, let’s take advantage of the good weather for MUTE.

Another band from Quebec City, which needs no introduction. A very active band that tours internationally.  They just came back from a tour in South America.  They accepted, at the last minute, to replace Craig’s Brother, who had to cancel their performance.  As with all changes, there are happy and disappointed people. I don’t know CRAIG’S BROTHER, but I’ve heard a lot of good things about MUTE.  

You can feel their stage experience.  They know how to get a crowd going.  The drummer, who performs the majority of the lead vocals, talks to the crowd a lot.  He even drops a « Are you ready tabarnak!!? » 

Already 6pm! Sorry, but with such a top line up, we have to make choices and sacrifices. We may be passionate about music, but we are still humans with natural needs. I’m hungry, I miss the whole set of JUGHEAD REVENGE.  

SATANIC SURFERS
I know the band by reputation only, but those who know me know that I have a small obsession with Swedish bands and their music. Just like No fun at all, the setlist is simple.  They play the entire « Hero of Our time » album. I love these concepts. It has the effect of taking us back to the time when we used to listen to the whole album over and over. 

I approach the stage with the intention of finding a permanent seat for the next three shows.  First row, so as not to miss anything of the show, but especially of the atmosphere.  I’m lucky, there’s still room at the gate. I am in the heart of the action. I will keep this place, at the risk of my life, until the end of the festival. Nothing less than my favorite place in life, « front row » in a punk rock festival.  The crowd gathers near the stage. A nice big gang of nostalgic people, ready to live an unforgettable moment. We are not disappointed.  Faultless performance. A nice connection between the band and the crowd.  The bassist tells us stories to give the drummer a break. I was expecting something good, but not to get into the show so much.  My favorite of the weekend.  

8:20 PM VOODOO GLOW SKULLS
Great! They give a whole show, as much visual as musical. The singer is masked and disguised. An original staging that adds a touch of madness. The crowd is intense. We have the right to big festive pit. For some, intensity and alcohol do not mix. An intruder managed to get in between my husband and me. I respect people who have fun, who scream and move, but there is always someone who crosses the line, at least mine. My new neighbor is intense, she has so much trouble containing her joy that she screams, even and especially when it’s not time. I usually have little patience for this kind of behavior, but I stay positive. She really seems to be a VOODOO fan, she should leave after their set. 

As soon as VOODOO GLOW SKULLS‘ performance is over, the storm breaks.  In spite of the withdrawal of the weather alert, we do not escape it. Without warning, the sky falls on our head. The big rain, the wind and the hail. In a few seconds, the site fills with water.  Many run for cover, desperately looking for a covered place to take shelter while others, who have a sense of timing, take advantage of a passage in the chemical toilets to stay hidden. 

I, and a thousand other « hardcore » fans, stay in the rain and hail hoping it won’t last long. I can’t leave now.  I have a prime spot, I can’t leave it, I’ve been waiting for so long. Protected by our ponchos, we try to be positive, to convince ourselves that this is just a small storm. I do not want to believe that I will not see LESS THAN JAKE today. Rej Laplanche encourages us and asks us to be patient. 

We do not wait a long time, all the stock is put back in place, the stage is sponged , the show finally takes place.

LESS THAN JAKE
My favorite band since always (1998).  My best of the Vans Warped Tour 1998. Since then, I have never stopped loving them and following that band. I have nothing but praise for them. One of the bands I’ve seen most often live and I fall in love with them every time. Whether it’s on a big indoor stage, an outdoor stage, or a small stage, I am never disappointed. Their shows are always impeccable. Everything is there, the energy, the intensity.  The site is devastated, but the crowd is back in force. Once I’m in my bubble, nothing else matters. This is my moment, pure happiness, thousands of voices to sing with me! I know all the lyrics by heart and I don’t miss any.    

1h30 of LESS THAN JAKE!  However, I had forgotten that he spent half of it talking.  With all due respect to Chris, I can’t believe he’s rambling. I don’t want to hear about the health care system when I go to a ska show that’s supposed to make me dance and party.  I like bands that interact with their audience, that tell a few stories, but you have to play songs too!  It makes me feel a bit down, but they have fun, so why not? They like to tease the fans and « humiliate » them with humor, by the way. Normally, they get the « old guys » on stage for a song (my husband was one of the victims in 2014, at the Warped tour in Montreal). This time the ideal prey, Anne-Marie, « the crowd surfer ». Chris and Roger find the idea of « crowd surfing » between songs very funny. 

« You’re weird in Canada.  Crowd surfing between songs… why? »

I hope she wasn’t running away for a quickie, because now she has to stay on stage and dance through the whole song.

The show ends with the song, « Ghost of me and you » and the beautiful voice of Roger. The musicians leave the stage to the cheers of the crowd. The drummer approaches us, I hardly notice it. I applaud with everyone when I see an object flying in my direction. By reflex, I raise my arm and his stick lands in my hand.  What a great memory!!!  

I can’t wait for next year.
