WEDNESDAY 13 + CHANGE MY BRAIN WITH CAKES | L’ANTI BAR & SPECTACLES | 05.10.2022

Heureux hasard que le groupe WEDNESDAY 13 se soit pointé à Québec un… mercredi! Dans le genre « shock rock » à la Alice Cooper, W13 se trouve à ressembler à Kiss mais en pas mal plus lourd. Et quant à moi, meilleur.

Oui, tous les clichés sont là, mais on est ici pour avoir du fun, et ils nous en donnent pour notre argent. On est quand même en présence d’un groupe qui a fait le Bloodstock en 2018. Deuxième fois que je les vois et là, on a droit à une version scénique plus « soft », tout en maquillage mais sans personnages ni feu ou autre artifice. C’est leur tournée « 20 Years Of Fear », et Jo le chanteur explique que ce nom a été choisi parce qu’il y a 20 ans il a décidé de quitter sa job de bouette au Kmart pour se lancer dans la musique, notamment avec les Murderdolls, et qu’il ne regrette rien.

J’aime vraiment l’interaction avec les fans, ainsi que les simagrées des autres musiciens. Ces messieurs savent comment intéresser leur public. Toutefois, même si les fans sont là à chanter et à montrer le poing, je trouve qu’ils sont peu nombreux et plutôt tranquilles. C’est juste avant le faux rappel, à « Homesweet Homicide », qu’ils se décident à se laisser aller, dans un mini moshpit qui durera jusqu’à la fin.

Mes tounes préférées? « Serpent Society » et « Keep Watching the Skies », pour la rythmique basse + batterie comme une marche militaire. À ne pas manquer s’ils reviennent en ville. Et à écouter : leur récent album Horrifier, tout juste sorti le 7 octobre!

C’est le groupe de Québec CHANGE MY BRAIN WITH CAKES qui a eu l’honneur, pour vrai, de faire la première partie de WEDNESDAY 13, et encore une fois c’était un match parfait. De la même lignée que Spacemak3r, ils jouent la carte des artistes de cirque « crackpots » qui racontent des histoires d’horreur et sautent partout comme s’ils sortaient d’un asile.

Je savais à quoi m’attendre puisque c’est la deuxième fois que je les vois, eux aussi. Et je savais qu’ils seraient à la hauteur. Pas de répit avec eux, il faut regarder partout pour ne rien manquer. La formule « animateur » a changé, celui-ci participant davantage comme second chanteur, et c’est plus dynamique.

Honnêtement, je pense qu’ils ont déjà gagné leur place dans ce créneau musical particulier. Enfin, mention spéciale au batteur, pour l’accompagnement vocal.

It’s a happy coincidence that WEDNESDAY 13 showed up in Quebec City on a Wednesday night! In true Alice Cooper “shock rock” fashion, W13 is reminiscent of Kiss but a lot heavier. And I dare say, better.

Yes, all the clichés are there, but we’re here to have fun, and they’re give us our money’s worth. Let’s not forget that they played at Bloodstock in 2018. For my second time around, we’re treated to a softer stage version, all makeup but no characters or fire or other artifice. It’s their « 20 Years Of Fear » tour, and Jo the singer explains that the name was chosen 20 years ago when he decided to leave his shitty job at Kmart to start playing music, notably with the Murderdolls, and he doesn’t regret it.

I’m really enjoying the interaction with the fans, as well as the antics of the other musicians. They sure know how to engage with their audience. However, even though the fans are out there singing and pumping their fists, the crowd is small and rather quiet. It’s just before the fake encore, during « Homesweet Homicide », that they decide to let loose in a small moshpit that lasts until the end.

My faves? « Serpent Society » and « Keep Watching the Skies », for the bass + drums combo beating like a military march. Do not miss W13 when they come back into town. And give a listen to their recent album Horrifier, freshly released on October 7th!

Quebec City band CHANGE MY BRAIN WITH CAKES had the true honor of opening for WEDNESDAY 13, and once again it was a perfect match. Akin to Spacemak3r, they’re playing the role of circus freaks telling horror stories and jumping around like they escaped from an asylum. I knew what to expect since this is the second time I’m seeing them, too. And I knew they would be up to the task. There’s no time to rest with this band, you have to be on the lookout to not miss anything. The « hosting » formula is different, the host being more involved as a sidekick singer, and it’s more dynamic. Honestly, I think they’ve already earned their place in this particular musical niche. And, a final shout out to the drummer for his backing vocals.
