HATEBREED + TERROR + VEIN.FM + JESUS PIECE | THÉATRE LE CAPITOLE | 03. 09.2023
La scène hardcore, qu’on a cru à l’agonie il y a à peine quelques années, connaît un regain de vie et de popularité. Cette montée est due en partie aux nouveaux groupes beatdown, j’en conviens. Mais les bons « vieux » groupes retrouvent d’anciens adeptes et souvent, leurs enfants sont à leur tour touchés par le « hardcore lifestyle ». Et c’est ce qu’on a pu constater en ce dimanche 3 septembre 2023 au Capitole de Québec. C’était beau de voir toutes ces générations rassemblées pour fêter le 20e anniversaire de l’album The Rise of Brutality.
JESUS PIECE
C’est le groupe JESUS PIECE qui a ouvert la soirée avec leur son metalcore déchaîné. Les riffs agressifs s’alternaient à un rythme effréné avec les breakdowns pesants à souhait.
Pour la première fois, je n’étais pas dans la foule, mais au balcon. Et c’est tout un spectacle de voir les adeptes faire leurs passes de « karaté-moulin à vent-cueillette de patates » d’en haut. (À ne pas prendre pour une insulte, j’en fais moi-même partie à l’occasion.) Le groupe a une énergie contagieuse.
VEIN.FM
Les métalleux ont pris d’assaut le devant de la scène pour la prestation de VEIN.FM et je dois dire que le mélange “hardcore-metal” dans le pit était assez particulier.
Le style musical du groupe aussi est assez particulier. En faisant des recherches, j’ai découvert un sous-genre qui m’était alors inconnu appelé “mathcore” et c’est ce qui les représente le mieux à mon avis. Pour faire simple, je dirais que c’est un peu la veine (évidemment) du metal progressif. Sans retenue, je dirais qu’ils sont les VOIVOD du hardcore. Les rythmes sont extrêmement changeants dans une même pièce.
Personnellement, je trouvais parfois difficile de les suivre. Mais ils ont tout de même fait des heureux, principalement du côté des métalleux et ils ont réussi à piquer ma curiosité.
Je suis habituellement plutôt positive dans mes critiques. Mais là, je dois donner une note négative pour l’éclairage des deux premiers groupes. Il y avait clairement abus des effets stroboscopiques et beaucoup de moments black out (notre photographe tient à s’excuser de la mauvaise qualité de ses photos…). À un point tel que je devais parfois fermer les yeux tellement c’était étourdissant et la noirceur rendait le moshpit assez dangereux merci!
TERROR
Sincèrement, TERROR a presque volé la vedette. Le parterre s’est considérablement rempli pour faire honneur aux deux derniers groupes de la soirée. Les gars ont ouvert les hostilités avec « Pain Into Power ». Le chanteur Scott Vogel a dès le début incité les plus braves du public à enfreindre les règles et ne pas tenir compte de la clôture pour monter sur la scène et faire du stage dive.
Et tout au long de leur prestation, il a encouragé la foule à les rejoindre, à sauter et à faire du crowdsurfing au grand dam des agents de sécurité. Le Capitole n’était pas prêt à ça, je crois! Les gars ont plusieurs années d’expérience, ils sont à l’aise sur scène, leurs tounes sont rodées au quart de tour, ils fracassent tout.
Surtout avec des titres comme « Spit My Rage », « Stick Tight », « Always the Hard Way », « Your Enemies Are Mine » et j’en passe. On a eu droit à une finale qui tue avec « Keepers of the Faith ». J’en veux encore!
HATEBREED
Après une telle prestation, la barre était haute pour HATEBREED. Mais eux aussi ont plusieurs années d’expérience derrière la cravate. Comme je l’ai mentionné plus haut, la tournée actuelle est d’ailleurs pour fêter le 20e anniversaire de l’album The Rise of Brutality, et Jamey (Jasta, le chanteur) nous a aussi fait remarquer qu’eux et les gars de TERROR se connaissent depuis plus de 30 ans. HATEBREED, dont le style est influencé à la fois par le New York hardcore « old school » et par le thrash metal, a des fans chez les adeptes de chacun des deux styles.
Plutôt, j’ai parlé des différentes générations. À côté de moi, j’avais une famille de fans : papa, maman et les deux filles, adolescentes. Ils ont chanté pratiquement toutes les chansons de la soirée. Jamey prend régulièrement le temps de parler au public, soit en racontant des anecdotes, soit en demandant qui les voyait pour la première fois. Et qui n’était pas né à la sortie de l’album. Ouff! On est quelques-uns à avoir pris un coup de vieux! À l’instar de Scott, Jamey invite le public à participer. Mais en sautant, en levant les bras… tout en restant du bon côté de la barrière.
Il fallait s’y attendre, le groupe a joué 10 des 12 pièces de l’album à l’origine de la tournée. Parmi ceux-ci « Another Day Another Vendetta », « Beholder of Justice », « Live for This », « Straigth to Your Face », « Tear it Down » et « This is Now ». Mais en plus, HATEBREED nous a gratifié du méga hit « Destroy Everything », mon coup de cœur de la soirée pour l’électricité provenant à la fois du groupe et de la foule. D’autres morceaux tout aussi bons nous ont été livrés comme « Before Dishonor » et « Smash Your Enemies ».
Au final, on a passé une excellente soirée hardcore au Capitole de Québec. À voir la foule et les différentes générations présentes, je constate que la scène est encore active. Il reste à espérer que parmi les jeunes présents, certains auront le goût de prendre le relais.

The hardcore music scene, thought to be in its death throes just a few years ago, is enjoying a resurgence in popularity. This rise is partly due to the new beatdown bands, I agree. But the good « old” bands are reuniting with their old followers, and often their children are in turn influenced by the « hardcore lifestyle ». And that’s what we witnessed on Sunday, September 3rd, 2023 at the Théâtre Le Capitole in Quebec City. It was great to see all these generations gathered to celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Rise of Brutality album.
JESUS PIECE
JESUS PIECE opened the evening with their raging metalcore sound. Aggressive riffs alternated at a frantic pace with heavy breakdowns. For the first time, I wasn’t in the crowd, but at the balcony. And it’s quite a sight to see the fans doing their « karate-windmill-potato-picking » passes from above. (Not an insult, I’m part of it myself occasionally.) The band’s energy is contagious.
VEIN.FM
Metalheads stormed the front of the stage for VEIN.FM‘s performance, and I have to say that the « hardcore-metal heads » mix in the pit was quite particular. The band’s musical style was also quite distinctive. Doing some research, I discovered a sub-genre that was unknown to me at the time, called « mathcore », and this is what I think represents them best. To put it simply, I’d say it’s the vein (get it?) of progressive metal. Without a doubt, I’d say they’re the VOIVOD of hardcore. The rhythms are extremely varied within a same track. Personally, I sometimes found it hard to keep up. But they still made a lot of people happy, mainly metalheads, and managed to pique my curiosity.
I’m usually pretty positive in my reviews. But this time, I have to give a bad mark for the lighting of the first two bands. There was an obvious abuse of strobe effects and many black out moments (our photographer apologizes for the poor quality of her shots…). So much so that I sometimes had to close my eyes because it was so dizzying, and the darkness made the moshpit quite dangerous.
TERROR
Honestly, TERROR almost stole the show. The audience grew considerably bigger to honour the last two bands of the evening. The guys opened with “Pain Into Power”. Right from the start, singer Scott Vogel encouraged the bravest members of the audience to break the rules and ignore the fence to get on stage and stagedive. And throughout their set, he encouraged the crowd to join in, jumping and crowd surfing, much to the annoyance of the security guards. I don’t think the Capitole was ready for that! The guys have years of experience, they’re at ease on stage, their tunes are honed to a T, they smash everything. Especially with songs like “Spit My Rage”, “Stick Tight”, “Always the Hard Way”, “Your Enemies Are Mine” and so on. And we were treated to a killer finale with “Keepers of the Faith”. I want more!
HATEBREED
After a performance like that, the bar was set high for HATEBREED. But they, too, have years of experience. As I mentioned above, the current tour is to celebrate the 20th anniversary of The Rise of Brutality album, and singer Jamey Jasta also pointed out that they and the guys from TERROR have known each other for over 30 years. HATEBREED, whose style is influenced by both « old school » New York hardcore and thrash metal, has fans from both styles.
I previously talked about the different generations. Next to me, I had a family of fans: Dad, Mom and their two teenage daughters. They sang practically every song of the evening. Jamey regularly takes the time to talk to the audience, either telling anecdotes or asking who was seeing them for the first time. And who wasn’t born when the album came out. Whoo! Some of us felt quite old! Like Scott, Jamey invites the audience to join in. But only by jumping, raising his arms… and staying on the right side of the fence.
Not surprisingly, the band played 10 of the 12 songs from the album the tour is based on. These included “Another Day Another Vendetta”, “Beholder of Justice”, “Live for This”, “Straigth to Your Face”, “Tear it Down” and “This is Now”. And on top of that, HATEBREED gifted us with the mega-hit “Destroy Everything”, my personal favorite of the evening for the energy coming from both the band and the crowd. Other equally good tracks from the setlist included “Before Dishonor” and “Smash Your Enemies”.
All in all, it was an excellent evening of hardcore at the Capitole de Québec. Looking at the crowd and the different generations there, I can see that the scene is still active. Let’s hope that some of them youngsters will be enticed to take the reins.
