NOVA SPEI + OBSOLETE MANKIND + WITHIN EMBERS | PHOQUE OFF 2026 – L’ANTI | 21.02.2026

Pour la dernière soirée du Phoque Off 2026, je me dirige vers L’Anti. En tant que femme musicienne, je trouvais particulièrement important d’aller soutenir l’événement nommé la SOIRÉE DES GUEULEUSES. On nous présente trois groupes mettant de l’avant des femmes ayant une voix et un talent incroyables, soit NOVA SPEI, OBSOLETE MANKIND ainsi que WITHIN EMBERS.

J’arrive juste à temps pour le début du spectacles, qui commence avec le groupe NOVA SPEI, un groupe de metal de Trois-Rivières, qui sort d’une pause pour nous livrer ce spectacle à L’ANTI ce soir. En effet, il s’agit de leur deuxième spectacle depuis environ un an et demi. Nous apprenons que leur chanteuse, Emmanuelle Desbiens, fait nouvellement partie du groupe et elle prend bien sa place!

Dès les premières paroles, sa voix donne le ton de la soirée : on sait à quoi s’attendre ce soir, et c’est impressionnant! Ils ouvrent la soirée avec la chanson « Renaissance », leur tout dernier simple sorti récemment. D’ailleurs, elle se retrouvera sur l’album qu’ils préparent présentement. La foule est assez tranquille, mais on voit que tout le monde est bien attentif et apprécie ce qu’il voit et entend.

On nous présente ensuite le groupe OBSOLETE MANKIND, un groupe de death metal de Montréal. Honnêtement, ça fesse fort! Encore une fois, nous avons droit à une voix impressionnante et les musiciens sont solides, très tight. Le groupe enchaîne neuf chansons pratiquement une à la suite de l’autre, entrecoupées de séquences ambiantes et captivantes, laissant place à des interactions entre le groupe et la foule.

Le public est toujours bien attentif et commence à se dégêner, à bouger un peu plus. Le groupe a définitivement réussi ce qu’il venait accomplir sur scène et a livré ses chansons avec talent. Je sais que c’est une réussite car, même si ce n’est pas un style que j’écoute religieusement, je me suis surprise à partir presque en transe pendant tout le spectacle tellement j’étais captivée et attentive. On a vécu quelque chose, collectivement, pendant leur performance.

C’est maintenant au tour du dernier groupe de la soirée, celui qui clôture la SOIRÉE DES GUEULEUSES : WITHIN EMBERS. J’ai souvent entendu parler d’eux de nom, mais je n’avais jamais encore eu l’occasion de les voir. C’était donc une bonne opportunité pour moi d’aller voir de quoi il s’agit. Ils sont un band de metal progressif de Québec. Déjà en voyant la chanteuse, Sybelis, monter sur scène, j’ai une première impression positive : j’adore son look! Pour la troisième fois ce soir, je suis impressionnée par les voix!

Sérieux, on a du talent à Québec! Je suis aussi agréablement surprise d’entendre en plus des voix clean. Ce qui démarque beaucoup WITHIN EMBERS, c’est aussi leur complicité sur scène : c’est beau de les voir! Ils s’échangent des regards, des rires et des sourires, vont se rejoindre l’un et l’autre sur la scène… On voit qu’ils ont vraiment du plaisir ensemble. Ils savent faire lever la foule et ajoutent à leur spectacle des éléments qui les distinguent. Par exemple, on a droit à des paroles chantées dans un téléphone. Enfin, leur prestation se termine sur « Choral of Death ».

Bien que je sois légèrement sortie de ma zone de confort musical ce soir, j’ai adoré ma soirée. Tous les bands présentés ont un énorme talent et méritent vraiment leur place dans la scène. Merci au PHOQUE OFF et aux Gueuleuses de nous avoir présenté ce spectacle et de mettre de l’avant des femmes avec un grand talent. #MoreWomenOnStage

For the last night of the Phoque Off, 2026 edition, I’m headed to L’Anti. As a female musician, I felt it was particularly important to go and support what was dubbed the “Soirée des Gueuleuses” (Screamers Night). We are introduced to three bands featuring women with incredible voices and talent: NOVA SPEI, OBSOLETE MANKIND and WITHIN EMBERS.

I get there just in time for the beginning of the show, which kicks off with NOVA SPEI, a metal band from Trois-Rivières, who are coming out of hiatus to play at L’Anti tonight. This is their second show in about a year and a half. We learn that their singer, Emmanuelle Desbiens, is a new member of the band and she’s fitting right in! From the very first lyrics, her voice sets the tone for the evening: we know what to expect tonight, and it’s impressive! “Renaissance,” their most recent single, serves as the opening song. It will also be included on the album they are currently working on. The crowd is fairly calm, but you can see that everyone is paying close attention and enjoying what they see and hear.

Next up is OBSOLETE MANKIND, a death metal band from Montreal. Honestly, they totally rock! Once again, we are treated to impressive vocals and solid, tight performances from the musicians. The band plays nine songs practically one after the other, punctuated by captivating ambient sequences, leaving space for some interaction between the band and the crowd. The audience is still very attentive and starts to loosen up and move a little more. The band definitely achieved what they came to do on stage and delivered their songs with talent. I know it was a success because, even though it’s not a style I listen to religiously, I found myself almost in a trance for the entire show, that’s how captivated and attentive I was. We experienced something collectively during their performance.

Now it’s time for the last band of the evening, the one that closes the “Gueuleuses” night: WITHIN EMBERS. I’d often heard of them, but I’ve never had the chance to see them before. So this was a good opportunity for me to go and see what this progressive metal band from Quebec City is made of. As soon as I saw the singer, Sybelis, walk onto the stage, I had a positive first impression: I love her style! For the third time tonight, I’m impressed by the vocals! Seriously, there’s lots of talent in Quebec City! I’m also pleasantly surprised to hear clean vocals. What stands out about WITHIN EMBERS is their chemistry on stage: it’s beautiful to see! They exchange glances, laughter, and smiles, and come together on stage… You can see that they really enjoy playing together. They know how to get the crowd going and add elements to their show that tells them apart from the others. For example, we are treated to lyrics sung into a phone. Finallye, the show ends with “Choral of Death.” 

Although I stepped slightly outside my musical comfort zone tonight, I loved my evening. All the bands featured are hugely talented and truly deserve their place on the scene. Thanks to Le Phoque Off organization and Les Gueuleuses for hosting this show and showcasing such talented women. #MoreWomenOnStage
