FESTIVAL AU LAC GRANBY | 4/5/6.06.2026

Le FESTIVAL AU LAC de Granby en est déjà à sa 4^e édition. De mon côté, c’était une toute première visite, et aussi une première couverture de l’événement pour CHICKS ROCK MEDIA. Dès le départ, on sent qu’avec une programmation aussi variée, le festival a de quoi plaire à bien du monde.

JEUDI 4 JUIN
Comme Granby est à quelques heures de route de chez moi, j’ai malheureusement manqué les deux premiers groupes, DROP IT FIRST et THE PLANET SMASHERS. Après quelques détours dans les rues autour du site pour trouver un stationnement, on est finalement arrivés à l’entrée vers 19 h, juste au moment où GRIMSKUNK embarquait sur scène.

L’entrée sur le site s’est faite sans casse-tête, autant pour mon chum, qui passait par l’accès des festivaliers, que pour moi, qui devais récupérer ma passe média. Le personnel nous a accueillis avec le sourire, ce qui a tout de suite donné le ton à la soirée.

La température est parfaite et, en approchant de la scène, on a presque l’impression d’être déjà en vacances. Même si on est un jeudi, il y a beaucoup de monde, ce qui me surprend agréablement. L’ambiance est à la fois relaxe et festive, avec des sourires un peu partout. On croise aussi plusieurs enfants, coquilles sur les oreilles, qui dansent sur les épaules de leurs parents. C’est une belle scène à voir.

GRIMSKUNK, fidèle à sa réputation, a rapidement embarqué la foule. Je me suis moi-même laissée entraîner vers l’avant de la scène. Groupe phare au Québec, il a encore une fois montré à quel point il sait rassembler : une bonne partie du public chantait à pleins poumons des incontournables comme « Gros tas d’marde », « ¡Ya Basta! », « Les Insoumis » et « La vache ». On a aussi eu droit à une nouveauté inspirée du groupe hardcore AGNOSTIC FRONT, « United & Strong ». Une belle surprise.

BOUNCING SOULS
Il y avait un peu moins de monde tassé devant la scène, mais la foule restait bien présente et très réceptive. Le groupe a lui aussi glissé une nouveauté dans son set et, même si je connaissais surtout « True Believer », ça ne m’a pas empêchée de bouger du début à la fin.

LESS THAN JAKE
L’avant-scène s’est remplie rapidement dès l’arrivée du groupe. Ils ont livré une performance vive, généreuse et franchement le fun, avec une belle énergie sur scène. À un moment, le chanteur a lancé à la blague qu’il venait d’avaler un insecte, ce qui a bien fait rire la foule. Ils ont aussi demandé le plus gros circle pit possible, et le public n’a pas hésité une seconde à embarquer.

VENDREDI 5 JUIN
Le vendredi a commencé avec AARSEN, qui a donné le ton à une journée qui allait tranquillement monter en intensité.

EMERY a offert une performance solide, marquée entre autres par une reprise de « In the Air Tonight » de Phil Collins. La formation se distingue par sa richesse musicale : deux guitaristes, un chanteur, un bassiste qui assure aussi des voix, un batteur et un percussionniste-claviériste. Sur scène, ça donne quelque chose de dense, vivant et très efficace.

Après une pause souper, l’avant-scène s’est mise à se remplir peu à peu en prévision de la soirée.

HASTE THE DAY
Avec son metalcore efficace, HASTE THE DAY a vite fait grimper l’intensité. Le contact avec la foule était excellent et le pit s’est activé presque tout de suite. Le groupe proposait un son bien dosé, avec juste assez de passages plus mélodiques pour créer un bel équilibre. Les voix s’accordaient à merveille, et l’ensemble était livré avec précision et beaucoup d’énergie.

FINCH a gardé la machine bien lancée avec une performance soutenue qui a maintenu l’attention du public tournée vers l’avant-scène.

ANBERLIN a ensuite pris le relais avec une proposition différente, ajoutant un peu de variété à une soirée déjà bien construite.

CHEVELLE a clairement été l’un des grands moments de la soirée. Dès son arrivée sur scène, le groupe a été accueilli avec enthousiasme et la foule s’est resserrée rapidement. Le trio occupait très bien l’espace : batterie à gauche, guitare et voix au centre, basse à droite. La basse ressortait particulièrement bien dans le mix, et certaines intonations vocales rappelaient parfois le groupe Tool. Le chanteur a pris le temps de lancer un « Bonjour Québec » et un « merci beaucoup » en français, un geste simple, mais très apprécié.

SAMEDI 6 JUIN
BLANK a lancé la journée en force, sous la pluie, sans jamais laisser retomber l’énergie. Très vite, la foule s’est mise à bouger entre moshpit et wall of death. Le groupe a terminé sa prestation avec la première pièce qu’il a écrite, celle qu’il garde toujours pour la fin. La chanson aborde le suicide et les questions douloureuses qui restent après, avec en filigrane cette idée qu’un simple appel à l’aide aurait peut-être pu changer les choses. 

Comme je faisais la file pour le meet & greet de JINJER, j’ai surtout suivi leur prestation de loin. Même à cette distance, une chose sautait aux oreilles : le son restait excellent, peu importe où l’on se trouvait sur le site. Et je n’étais visiblement pas la seule à vouloir rencontrer le groupe. On nous a prévenus que, vu le nombre de personnes sur place, il n’y aurait pas vraiment le temps de prendre des photos, à moins d’en faire une rapidement, sur le vif. J’ai quand même réussi à faire autographier mon vinyle par les quatre membres, et à repartir avec une photo prise au passage.

DEADLY APPLES a pris la relève dans une atmosphère enveloppée de boucane rouge. C’était leur premier spectacle au Québec depuis sept ans, et ça se sentait que ce retour était attendu. En fin de prestation, le chanteur est même descendu rejoindre les fans pour chanter avec eux, dans un moment particulièrement fort.

PAIN OF TRUTH
Quand le groupe est monté sur scène, le soleil recommençait à percer. Leur passage a été particulièrement mouvementé : moshpit, bouette, accessoires gonflables et énergie débordante. Une reprise de Sunami s’est aussi glissée dans le set, au grand plaisir des plus motivés.

TERROR
Le spectacle a bien failli ne pas avoir lieu, puisque Scott, le chanteur, s’était cassé les côtes deux jours plus tôt. Finalement, c’est Chris, habituellement à la basse, qui a pris le relais au chant – le jour même de sa fête. Comme si ce n’était pas assez, des membres d’autres groupes sont aussi venus le rejoindre sur scène à quelques reprises, ce qui a donné à la performance une énergie encore plus spéciale. Et pour le plus grand bonheur de la foule, Chris a aussi tendu le micro au public sur certains passages, créant de gros moments de communion.

BRAND OF SACRIFICE  a amené une proposition plus métal et plus technique, sans jamais perdre en intensité. Malgré la complexité de la musique, le groupe restait très mobile et très solide sur scène.

THE GHOST INSIDE avait visiblement envie d’être là, et ça se ressentait dans sa manière de connecter avec le public. Il y a eu beaucoup de bodysurfing, des riffs lourds, une batterie bien présente et plusieurs changements de rythme efficaces. Les voix, entre passages plus mélodiques et growls plus agressifs, étaient particulièrement réussies. Le chanteur prenait souvent le temps de repérer des gens dans la foule pour leur sourire ou leur lancer quelques mots, ce qui rendait le moment encore plus humain. Plusieurs spectateurs chantaient aussi avec intensité, surtout pendant les pièces les plus marquantes.

JINJER
Le groupe ukrainien a conclu la journée avec beaucoup d’assurance et une présence scénique remarquable. Dès les premières minutes, la formation a capté l’attention de la foule avec une aisance impressionnante. Tatiana, la chanteuse et figure de proue du groupe, dégage un charisme naturel, autant par sa prestance que par sa voix puissante, qui contrastait joliment avec sa tenue de dentelle noire. Et quand elle bascule vers le growl, l’effet est saisissant : difficile d’imaginer qu’une voix aussi grave et féroce puisse provenir de la même personne.

Après trois jours de festival, le Festival au Lac confirme qu’il sait réunir des styles variés et des publics tout aussi différents dans une ambiance chaleureuse, vivante et facile d’accès. Entre les découvertes, les moments forts sur scène et l’énergie constante de la foule, cette première couverture de l’événement restera pour moi particulièrement marquante. Mes coups de cœur du week-end vont à GRIMSKUNK, HASTE THE DAY, BLANK, PAIN OF TRUTH, TERROR et bien sûr, JINJER.

The Festival au Lac de Granby is already in its fourth year. For me, it was my very first visit, and also my first time covering the event for Chicks Rock Media. Right from the start, it was clear that with such a diverse lineup, the fest had something to appeal to just about everyone.

THURSDAY, JUNE 4
Since Granby is a few hours’ drive from my home, I unfortunately missed the first two bands, DROP IT FIRST and THE PLANET SMASHERS. After a few detours through the streets around the venue to find parking, we finally arrived at the entrance around 7 p.m., just as GRIMSKUNK was taking the stage.

Getting into the venue was a quick and easy process, both for my boyfriend, who went through the festival-goer entrance, and for me, who had to pick up my press pass. The staff welcomed us with smiles, which immediately set the tone for the evening.

The weather is perfect, and as we approach the stage, it almost feels like we’re already on vacation. Even though it’s a Thursday, there’s a big crowd, which pleasantly surprises me. The atmosphere is both laid-back and festive, with smiles all around. We also see several kids, earmuffs on, dancing on their parents’ shoulders. It’s a beautiful sight.

True to their reputation, GRIMSKUNK quickly got the crowd going. I found myself drawn to the front of the stage. As one of Quebec’s leading bands, they once again showed just how well they can bring people together: a good portion of the audience was belting out classics like “Gros tas d’marde,” “¡Ya Basta!,” “Les Insoumis,” and “La vache.” We were also treated to a new song inspired by hardcore band Agnostic Front, “United & Strong.” A nice surprise.

BOUNCING SOULS
There were slightly fewer people packed in front of the stage, but the crowd remained very present and receptive. The band also slipped a new track into their set, and even though I was mostly familiar with “True Believer,” that didn’t stop me from dancing from start to finish.

LESS THAN JAKE
The front of the stage filled up quickly as soon as the band arrived. They delivered a lively, energetic, and downright fun performance, with great energy on stage. At one point, the vocalist joked that he’d just swallowed an insect, which had the crowd in stitches. They also asked for the biggest circle pit possible, and the audience didn’t hesitate for a second to jump in.

FRIDAY, JUNE 5
Friday kicked off with AARSEN, who set the tone for a day that would gradually build in intensity.

EMERY delivered a solid performance, highlighted in part by a cover of Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight.” The band stands out for its musical richness: two guitarists, a singer, a bassist who also provides backing vocals, a drummer, and a percussionist-keyboardist. On stage, this creates a dense, lively, and highly effective sound.

After a dinner break, the front of the stage began to fill up little by little in anticipation of the evening.

HASTE THE DAY
With their effective metalcore, the band quickly ramped up the intensity. The connection with the crowd was excellent, and the moshpit kicked into gear almost immediately. The band delivered a well-balanced sound, with just enough melodic passages to create a nice balance. The vocals blended perfectly, and the whole performance was delivered with precision and plenty of energy.

FINCH kept the momentum going with a sustained performance that kept the audience’s attention focused on the front of the stage.

ANBERLIN then took the stage with a different approach, adding a bit of variety to an already well-structured evening.

CHEVELLE was clearly one of the highlights of the evening. As soon as they took the stage, the band was greeted with enthusiasm, and the crowd quickly closed in. The trio occupied the stage very effectively: drums on the left, guitar and vocals in the center, bass on the right. The bass stood out particularly well in the mix, and certain vocal inflections at times brought to mind the band Tool. The vocalist took the time to say “Bonjour Québec” and “merci beaucoup” in French—a simple gesture, but one that was greatly appreciated.

SATURDAY, JUNE 6
BLANK kicked off the day with a bang, performing in the rain without ever letting the energy drop. Very quickly, the crowd started moving between moshpit and wall of death. The band ended their set with the first song they ever wrote—the one they always save for last. The song addresses suicide and the painful questions that remain afterward, with the underlying idea that a simple cry for help might have changed things. 

Since I was waiting in line for the JINJER meet & greet, I mostly watched their performance from a distance. Even from that far away, one thing stood out: the sound was excellent no matter where you were on the site. And I clearly wasn’t the only one who wanted to meet the band. We were warned that, given the number of people there, there wouldn’t really be time to take photos, unless we snapped one quickly, on the spot. I still managed to get my vinyl signed by all four members and walk away with a photo taken on the fly.

DEADLY APPLES took the stage in a shroud of red smoke. It was their first show in Quebec in seven years, and you could tell this comeback was long-awaited. At the end of their set, the singer even came down to join the fans to sing with them, in a particularly powerful moment.

PAIN OF TRUTH
When the band took the stage, the sun was starting to break through again. Their set was particularly wild: moshpitting, mud, inflatable props, and overflowing energy. A cover of Sunami also slipped into the set, much to the delight of the most enthusiastic fans.

TERROR
The show almost didn’t happen, since Scott, the singer, had broken his ribs two days earlier. In the end, it was Chris, usually on bass, who took over on vocals—on his birthday, no less. As if that weren’t enough, members of other bands also joined him on stage a few times, giving the performance an even more special energy. And to the crowd’s delight, Chris also handed the mic to the audience during certain parts, creating some truly memorable moments of connection.

BRAND OF SACRIFICE
The band delivered a more metal-oriented and technical set, without ever losing intensity. Despite the complexity of the music, the band remained highly dynamic and solid on stage.

THE GHOST INSIDE
The band clearly loved being here, and it showed in the way they connected with the audience. There was plenty of crowd surfing, heavy riffs, a prominent drumbeat, and several effective tempo changes. The vocals, shifting between more melodic passages and more aggressive growls, were particularly well-executed. The vocalist often took the time to spot people in the crowd to smile at them or exchange a few words, which made the moment feel even more personal. Several audience members were also singing along with intensity, especially during the most memorable songs.

JINJER
The Ukrainian band closed out the day with great confidence and a remarkable stage presence. From the very first minutes, the band captured the crowd’s attention with impressive ease. Tatiana, vocalist and frontwoman, exudes natural charisma, both through her commanding presence and her powerful voice, which contrasted beautifully with her black lace outfit. And when she switches to growling, the effect is striking: it’s hard to imagine that such a deep, fierce voice could come out from the same person.

After this three-day fest, Festival au Lac confirms that it knows how to bring together diverse styles and equally diverse audiences in a warm, lively, and welcoming atmosphere. Between the new discoveries, the highlights on stage, and the crowd’s constant energy, this first coverage of the event will remain particularly memorable for me. My favorites from the weekend were GRIMSKUNK, HASTE THE DAY, BLANK, PAIN OF TRUTH, TERROR, and of course, JINJER.
