Je ne sais pas si vous avez remarqué, mais les modes culturelles suivent un cycle de 20 ans. Ce qui est populaire maintenant l’était en 2000, dans les années 1980 et à la limite les années 1960, sous réserve des changements sociétaux. Maintenant c’est les emos, avant c’était les goths, et encore avant c’était les alterns – plus ça change, plus c’est pareil. Trêve de bavardage, le groupe britannique NAUT plaira donc à cette bande de moins en moins marginale, composée autant de la jeunesse désoeuvrée d’aujourd’hui que de quinquagénaires portant de temps à autre du eyeliner dans des lieux obscurs. 

NAUT a déjà sorti deux EP depuis 2018, et le succès de ceux-ci leur a permis de passer au niveau suivant. Avec son album complet Hunt, NAUT suit la tendance postdarkwave et post-punk et revient carrément aux origines du genre, avec des sonorités typiques de guitare claire et de drum machine, et des thèmes sombres comme la fatalité, la division, et l’inertie mentale. Un premier clip a déjà été tourné pour la pièce « Unity of Opposites », mais celle-ci n’est pas, à mon avis, la meilleure, même si elle représente assez bien l’ensemble de l’album. Pour moi, c’est « Dissent » qui assure le flashback, « Damocles » qui illustre la fatalité de façon étrangement mélodieuse, « 8 in 3 » qui nous fait couler encore plus et enfin la dernière, « Watchers », qui risque d’éteindre bien des lueurs d’espoir. Bref, ne pas écouter trop souvent quand on ne file pas.

C’est un bon album, mais il est bon parce qu’on y retrouve une formule éprouvée, celle de la musique froide et techno-industrielle, influencée par le spleen et la crise existentielle, des sujet (trop) bien exploités dans les médias en ce moment.

Have you noticed that cultural fads follow a 20-year cycle? What’s popular now was popular in 2000, in the 80s, and even a bit in the 60s, subject to societal changes. Today it’s about emos, and before them they were goths, and before them, alterns – the more things change, the more they stay the same. So let’s get to it: British band NAUT will please this less and less marginal crowd, made up of today’s idle youth and fifty year olds wearing eyeliner in obscure places. 

NAUT has already released two EPs since 2018, and their success has taken the band to the next level. With their full-length album Hunt, NAUT follows the postdarkwave and post-punk trend and goes squarely back to the origins of the genre, with typical clean guitars and drum machine sounds and beats, and addressing dark themes like fatality, division, and mental inertia. A first video is already out for the track « Unity of Opposites », but this one is not, in my opinion, the best, even if it speaks for the whole album quite well. For me, it’s « Dissent » that sparks the flashback, « Damocles » that illustrates fatality in a strangely melodic way, « 8 in 3 » that makes us sink even more and finally the last one, « Watchers », that might put out any glimmer of hope. In short, don’t listen too often if you’re feeling down.

It’s a good album, but it’s good because it’s a tried and tested formula of cold and techno-industrial music, influenced by spleen (the feeling) and existential crisis, both subjects being (too) well exploited in the media at the moment.
