Wow.

LORNA SHORE. If you’ve been anywhere on the metal side of the internet in the past two years, you’ve seen this name plastered all over youtube, headlines, reaction videos and the like. Which is a feat in itself because prior to 2021, this very-heavy-yet-melodic deathcore outfit from New Jersey USA was pretty underground. Formed in 2010, LORNA SHORE steadily amassed a following within the underground deathcore / metalcore scene and gained somewhat of a cult status through trials, tribulations and lineup changes. The band’s history it littered with these, especially when it comes to the vocalist position. So it’s quite the triumph indeed that the vocalist change that threatened to ruin the band at the cusp of 2020 because of the very public drama that ensued, ended up actually saving it. Beyond just that, it launched the band to heights previously seemingly unattainable. Will Ramos’ recruitment and subsequent permanent membership in LORNA SHORE literally catapulted the group on the front page of everyone’s social media when they released the track To The Hellfire in 2021 and basically rewrote the code for what orchestral deathcore could be. I know I’d never heard anyone sound like them or any vocalist sound like Ramos at that point, and I’m not the only one who was blown away clearly, if the massive viral response they got online is anything to go by. Since then, LORNA SHORE have been putting in overtime to make sure this opportunity is not wasted, so they can show the world they’re not a one-hit-wonder type of band. They have a lot more to say, they have more surprises up their sleeves than To The Hellfire, they’re a complex entity and they’re not done hogging the spotlight. The results of these efforts were a series of singles in 2022, Sun//Eater, Into The Earth and Cursed to Die, that will culminate on October 14th with the release of their full length album Pain Remains. Let’s see if they managed to keep the torch lit with this record, or did the hellfires dim.

The album kicks off with Welcome Back O Sleeping Dreamer, and within 30 seconds when the choir vocals kicked in, I had goosebumps going. You can imagine the absolute satisfaction I felt when the song exploded into existence à 1:30. Good god these guys know how to nail their entrance. They let you know right away who they are: the symphonic elements, the break downs, the re-break downs when you think they can’t go any slower, the extremely detailed drumming and guitar riffs, Will Ramos’ inhuman vocals, the melodic hooks that crop back up when you least expect it. It’s all there within the first 7 minutes of the record. Ok LORNA SHORE, I’m sitting down and I’m attentive.

Next come the three singles in their intended listening order: Into The Earth, Sun//Eater and Cursed to Die. It’s interesting to see how these songs tie into each other within the flow of the album. Into the Earth had quite an unsettling video clip (admittedly very creative though), so to hear it within the context of the album makes it more palatable. Allows me to enjoy more of the song’s subtleties. Sun//Eater is an absolutely beautiful song in all its triumphant major chord violence. I never tire of LORNA SHORE’s use of choir vocals and huge orchestral ensemble. They understand how to properly support and lift their heaviness. Cursed To Die continues on that trend of heavy as hell songs that somehow manage to sound light and airy to the listener. Hats off. Now onto unknown territory. Soulless Existence tickled the part of my brain where melodic death metal resides, specifically Swedish melodeath. The song seems to be a love letter to the genre. Apotheosis and Wrath will deserve a few more listens for me to pick out their unique identities.

40 minutes in, we stand at the edge of the album’s end, and what an end it is: Pain Remains, a 20 minutes behemoth in 3 acts: I Dancing Like Flames, II After All I’ve Done I’ll Disappear, and III In A Sea Of Fire. One thing is for sure: LORNA SHORE aren’t fucking scared! This closer track will be as much a deterrent for some listeners as it excited me to no end, since I grew to love music through the lenses of progressive rock. 20 minutes songs are my drug of choice. Pain Remains I, II and III are an accomplishment in terms of song writing and execution. A master class in not giving a damn what the public will think and going for what you want to write anyway. You can tell the guys believed in it. It’s beautiful and haunting and grandiose in all the right spots. Some high points include: the sheer emotion in the vocals at the end of part I, the ethereal solo in part II, the violin melody over the finale of part III. This is peak composition right here. I’m floored.

Mission accomplished then! Pain Remains contains more than enough compositional intricacies to show LORNA SHORE are not a one trick pony whatsoever. They managed to cement their musical identity on this opus while separating themselves enough from what they released before to demonstrate they’re a band with a massive future ahead. LORNA SHORE will hit the road shortly after the release of this album for a US and Canadian tour with support from ABORTED, INGESTED, AMGELMAKER and OV SULFUR. A fire lineup to be sure. They’ll hit 26 cities over the span of 30 days, including Montreal on November 20th at l’Astral. The show’s already sold out, so a heartfelt congratulations to the lucky ones who grabbed tickets, I’m jealous in a good way. Please let us know how hard these new songs slap live!
