Ambitieux projet que celui de composer et produire un opéra, qui plus est si celui-ci est métal et composé de sept chanteuses de renom pour dix pièces d’une épique épopée.

Ce projet d’envergure a germé dans la tête de Magnus Karlsson il y a 20 ans. Depuis il en était habité et n’avait de cesse de le fignoler. Il a personnellement sélectionné les chanteuses et a recruté des musiciens d’orchestre symphonique pour transcender sa vision. Mais qui est Magnus vous dites-vous ? M. Karlsson est un des musiciens et producteurs les plus estimés de la scène metal européenne. Le CV de Karlsson comprend, mais sans s’y limiter, Last Tribe, Allen / Lande, Primal Fear, Kiske / Somerville, The Ferrymen, et son autre projet, Magnus Karlsson’s Free Fall.

J’avoue que j’attendais cet album avec délectation. Ne dit-on pas que « l’espoir fait vivre » ? On décortique tout ça.

Tout comme un opéra classique il y a l’ouverture avec Awaken entonné admirablement par Adrienne Cowan qui tient ici le rôle principal : amnésique elle cherche qui elle est. S’enchaîne ensuite la progression culminant au gré des titres rendus avec soin par chaque chanteuse/personnage. L’orchestration est fabuleuse, grandiose. Tout y est : des éléments symphoniques en parfaite symbiose avec la lourdeur du métal. D’une quête d’identité devenant voyage, une gamme d’émotions fortes nous transporte, font frissonner. En quelques mots : des duos/trios merveilleusement harmonieux, des mélodies puissantes et récurrentes, des chansons magnifiques par des chanteuses qui le sont tout autant et quel guitariste !

Au final, je n’ai hâte qu’à une seule chose désormais : assister à cette explosion lyrique en spectacle avec ce line-up complètement surréel !

This is an ambitious project to compose and produce an opera, which is more if it is metal and composed of seven renowned singers for 10 pieces of an epic journey.

This opera project started in Magnus Karlsson’s mind 20 years ago. Since then he had been inhabited by it and had never stopped polishing it. He personally selected female singers and recruited symphony orchestra musicians to transcend his vision. But who is Magnus you say to yourself? Mr. Karlsson is one of the most esteemed musicians and producers of the European metal scene. Karlsson’s resume includes, but is not limited to, Last Tribe, Allen / Lande, Primal Fear, Kiske / Somerville, The Ferrymen, and his other project, Magnus Karlsson’s Free Fall.

I admit that I was looking forward to this album with relish. Don’t we say that « hope gives life » ? We dissect it all.

Just like a classical opera there is the overture with Awaken sung admirably by Adrienne Cowan who holds the lead role here: with amnesia she searches for who she is. The progression then follows, culminating in the titles carefully rendered by each singer / character. The orchestration is fabulous, grandiose. Everything is there: symphonic elements in perfect harmony with the heaviness of the metal. From a quest for identity becoming a journey, a range of strong emotions transports us, makes us shiver. In a few words: wonderfully harmonious duos / trios, powerful and recurring melodies, magnificent songs by singers who are just as harmonious and what a guitarist!

In the end, I can’t wait for one thing now: to witness this lyrical explosion on stage with this completely surreal line-up!
