GRETA VAN FLEET + THE PRETTY RECKLESS + HANNAH WICKLUND & THE STEPPIN STONES | CENTRE VIDÉOTRON | 16.08.2022

Par où commencer, sinon par le fait qu’on dirait que les deux dernières années ont plutôt refroidi les ardeurs des amateurs de musique… Par crainte de manquer de place de stationnement, je me dépêche à arriver mais ce n’est pas la cohue, aucune file, et à 18h50, il y a encore très peu de gens dans la salle. Tellement que tous ceux qui se trouvent dans les gradins pourraient facilement finir de remplir le parterre. Quelques fans sont habillés pour l’occasion – chemises fleuries, jupes et ornements dans les cheveux, mais pas tant!

Peu importe, HANNAH WICKLUND et ses STEPPIN STONES en trio sont là, tout en cheveux et en guitare fuzzée à souhait. Ça sent déjà le patchouli, la jeune et gracieuse et talentueuse est en voix, la basse est très lourde, à la limite de la distorsion. Hannah et ses compagnons nous charment avec des pièces accrocheuses comme « Bomb Through the Breeze », « Shadowboxes » – qui est le f*ck you de Hannah aux médias sociaux, avec elle seule à la guitare, éclairée par les lumières de cellulaires.

L’ensemble fait penser à Janis Joplin, Joan Osborne et Heart, avec la même intensité toute « heart & soul » du blues. Leur set est très court, même pas 30 minutes, et se termine avec la pièce « Mama Said » amplifiée au wah-wah de la belle aux pieds nus. Très bon choix de première partie!

Les gens continuent d’arriver, mais c’est encore peu de monde. D’où je suis assise, c’est difficile d’avoir le pouls de ce public dispersé. Pour le stimuler peut-être, j’entends que le volume a été augmenté pour THE PRETTY RECKLESS, autre groupe avec une femme au micro, la bien connue Taylor Momsen, tout aussi en voix.

Elle est par contre plus mobile, à courir de droite à gauche et à monter sur les plateformes placées aux extrémités.

Elle parle aussi plus à la foule qui, je dois le dire, semble dormir au gaz. Là où ce serait le moment de danser ou même de faire du « headbanging », il ne se passe rien (ou bien je ne vois rien). Elle parle entre autres de la dernière visite du groupe à Québec, au FEQ de 2014, en première partie de Soundgarden, de leur nouvel album « Death by Rock and Roll » pour en annoncer la pièce-titre, et c’est seulement lorsqu’elle sollicite vraiment la foule que celle-ci participe, pendant « Make Me Wanna Die » et Going To Hell ».

On assiste à un super solo de guitare par Ben Phillips en fin de « Heaven Knows », cette pièce faisant assez penser à « Pour Some Sugar on Me » et Joan Jett.

La prestation est énergique, mais je me demande si c’était un bon choix de première partie compte tenu du style musical des deux autres.

Bon, les gradins sont pratiquement pleins, mais pas le parterre, et les gens continuent de se promener. Après une très longue intro instrumentale et un jeu d’ombres, le rideau imprimé de symboles de GRETA VAN FLEET tombe pour révéler un superbe décor quasi futuriste inspiré des années 60, flanqué de deux écrans verticaux. Le quatuor semble se perdre dans ce grand espace, surtout que Joshua (aussi pieds nus) ne bouge pas beaucoup non plus, du moins au début, car c’est pendant « Trip the Light » qu’il se met à parler davantage et à prendre sa place.

On aura ensuite droit à un solo de batterie pendant lequel Joshua descend même au niveau de la foule pour distribuer des fleurs, juché sur les épaules d’une autre personne, en plus de son boa et de son tambourin pendant la soirée.

Il y aura la chanson dite de célébration, « Heat Above », et la chanson pour les amoureux, sur fond de couleurs arc-en-ciel et de lumières de cellulaires, « Light My Love ». Tout est réglé au quart de tour : les impressionnants artifices pyrotechniques, dont je ressens la chaleur sur ma peau avant de les voir, les jeux d’éclairages de toutes les couleurs de tous les côtés et les jams qui n’en sont pas vraiment.

En particulier pendant « The Weight of Dreams », dont est tiré le nom de la tournée Dreams in Gold, alors que la finale est interminable – elle doit bien avoir duré 10 minutes!

Moi qui ne connais que leur album From the Fires, je ne reconnais pas beaucoup de pièces, je suis un peu perdue dans leur set, sauf que c’est un peu l’idée : je suis en train de m’imaginer à Woodstock, en robe et sandales (!), à rester debout toute la nuit, les oreilles et l’âme comblées. Un peu comme leurs fans qui restent plutôt tranquilles sur le parterre, mais qui sont debout dans les gradins.

Un rappel est prévu, ce n’est plus une surprise, et les frères Kiszka se laissent emporter par leur passion de jouer avec un maîtrise magistrale, dans le chaleureux cocon qu’est devenu la salle, et ils font durer le plaisir, trop pour certains qui quittent déjà et qui auront manqué le mashup avec Elvis pendant « Highway Tune ». Tant pis pour eux, nous on aura eu droit à un divin dessert!

Where to start, if not with the fact that it seems that the last two years have rather cooled the ardor of music lovers… For fear of running out of parking space, I hurry to arrive but there is no rush, no line, and at 6:50 pm, there are still very few people in the arena. So many that all those in the stands could easily finish filling the floor. Some fans are dressed for the occasion – flowery shirts, skirts and hair ornaments, but not that many!

No matter, HANNAH WICKLUND and her STEPPIN STONES trio are there, all hair and fuzzed guitar. It already smells like patchouli, the young and graceful talent is in voice, the bass is very heavy, at the limit of the distortion. Hannah and her companions charm us with catchy pieces like « Bomb Through the Breeze », « Shadowboxes » – which is Hannah’s f*ck you to social media, with her alone on guitar, lit by cell phone lights. The whole thing is reminiscent of Janis Joplin, Joan Osborne and Heart, with the same heart & soul intensity of the blues. Their set is very short, not even 30 minutes, and ends with the piece « Mama Said » amplified with the wah-wah of the barefoot beauty. Very good choice of opening act!

People keep coming, but it’s still a small crowd. From where I’m sitting, it’s hard to get the pulse of this scattered audience. Perhaps to stimulate it, I hear that the volume has been turned up for THE PRETTY RECKLESS, another band with a woman on the mic, the well-known Taylor Momsen, equally in voice. She is however more mobile, running from right to left and climbing on the platforms placed at the ends. She also talks more to the crowd, which, I must say, seems to be sleeping on gas. Where it would be a good time to dance or even headbang, nothing happens (or I don’t see anything). Among other things, she talks about the band’s last visit to Quebec City, at the 2014 FEQ, opening for Soundgarden, their new album « Death by Rock and Roll » to announce the title track, and it’s only when she really solicits the crowd that the crowd participates, during « Make Me Wanna Die » and Going To Hell. » There is a great guitar solo by Ben Phillips at the end of « Heaven Knows », this piece being quite reminiscent of « Pour Some Sugar on Me » and Joan Jett. The performance is energetic, but I wonder if it was a good choice of opening act considering the musical style of the other two.

Well, the stands are almost full, but not the floor, and people continue to walk around. After a very long instrumental intro and a set of shadows, the curtain printed with symbols of GRETA VAN FLEET falls to reveal a superb quasi-futuristic decor inspired by the 60s, flanked by two vertical screens. The quartet seems to get lost in this big space, especially since Joshua (also barefoot) doesn’t move much either, at least at the beginning, because it’s during « Trip the Light » that he starts to talk more and take his place. Then we get a drum solo where Joshua even comes down to the crowd to hand out flowers, perched on someone else’s shoulders, in addition to his boa and tambourine for the evening. There will be the so-called celebration song, « Heat Above, » and the song for lovers, set to a backdrop of rainbow colors and cell phone lights, « Light My Love. » Everything is set to the quarter turn: the impressive pyrotechnics, whose heat I feel on my skin before I see them, the lighting effects of all colors on all sides and the jams that are not really jams. Especially during « The Weight of Dreams », from which the name of the Dreams in Gold tour is taken, while the finale is endless – it must have lasted 10 minutes! As someone who only knows their album From the Fires, I don’t recognize many of the songs, I’m a bit lost in their set, but that’s kind of the point: I’m imagining myself at Woodstock, in dresses and sandals (!), staying up all night, ears and soul filled. A bit like their fans who stay rather quiet on the ground, but who are standing in the stands. An encore is planned, it’s not a surprise anymore, and the Kiszka brothers let themselves be carried away by their passion to play with a masterly mastery, in the warm cocoon that the hall has become, and they make the pleasure last, too much for some who are already leaving and who will have missed the mashup with Elvis during  » Highway Tune « . Too bad for them, we will have been entitled to a divine dessert!
