RED BRIDGE FEST 3e EDITION | PONT-ROUGE | 09.06.2023

Un festival punk rock, se déroule dans la ville de Pont-Rouge, tout près de Québec.  Un site magnifique, entouré de bois et bordé par la rivière.   Un festival de cette qualité à quelques minutes de chez moi, le rêve!  

Encore cette année, on a droit à un solide line up :  

Vendredi : DOWNSTATER, CRAIG’S BROTHER, CIGAR, GOOD RIDDANCE, et le clou de la soirée PENNYWISE, qui interprète en entier, l’album About Time (1995)

Samedi : KILLING DAISIES, COLOSFADE, FULLCOUNT, 30FOOTFALL, BAD COP BAD COP, BELVEDERE, CATCH 22, MAD CADDIES, STRUNG OUT, PENNYWISE, qui cette fois, interprète en entier, l’album Full Circle (1997). 

Deux de mes albums préférés d’un de mes bands préférés.  C’est tout une chance.  J’étais tellement déçu de ne pas avoir pu aller en Californie, lorsqu’ils ont joué leur 5 premiers albums en entier. Je ne pensais jamais pouvoir vivre ça. 

Avec un line up aussi complet, je ne suis pas surprise que les billets se soient tous vendus.  

Vendredi, 9 Juin

On arrive sur le site pile à l’heure!
Lorsque je fais mon entrée, je suis probablement aussi excitée que tous les enfants présents sur le site. J’aime l’ambiance exaltée des festivals de musique. Je suis prête à faire de nouvelles découvertes, mais honnêtement je suis ici pour PENNYWISE. 

La soirée débute à 17h45 avec DOWNSTATER, band Punk rock mélodique de Québec. Le front man Jean-Philippe Lagacé , JP,  est bien connu des fans de hardcore pour son groupe GET THE SHOT.  Il est aussi bien reconnu pour sa témérité sur scène et sa façon d’engager la foule.

Malheureusement, la soirée est jeune. Les punks en sont encore à faire leur entrée, se familiariser avec le site, siroter leur premières bières.  La foule est au rendez-vous, mais visiblement trop calme au goût du chanteur.  Ça ne l’empêche pas de commander un mini wall of death.   

Et moi qui pensait qu’il ne pourrait pas faire de crowd surfing c’était vraiment le sous-estimer.  C’est avec sa guitare qu’il se laisse porter par la foule. 

Les festivités sont lancées !

CRAIG’S BROTHER
Enfin diront plusieurs. Comme ils n’ont pas pu se présenter l’an passée, ils sont attendus avec impatience.

De Santa Cruz en Californie, le groupe cite LAGWAGON comme l’une de ses principales sources d’inspiration et ça s’entend. Performance correcte, sans plus.  Ils ont définitivement beaucoup de plaisir, mais le chanteur me donne l’impression d’être déjà un peu trop “sur le party”.

Je n’ai pas de coup de cœur, mais autour de moi, le monde ont du fun, c’est ce qui compte.  Le gros de la foule est toujours dispersé, aux booth de merch, aux bars, aux restos, mais leurs fans sont là et semblent comblés par la prestation.

Le Pit étant encore mollo, ça laisse la place aux jeunes pour expérimenter les joies des festivals de musique. Pour les plus jeunes, il y a des jeux gonflables, près de l’entrée, mais pour les plus vieux qui veulent suivre leurs parents, c’est possible de le faire en toute sécurité.

C’est une opportunité en or également, pour ces parents, de vivre leur passion avec leurs enfants. Ils vivent l’expérience complète, circle pit, crowd surfing… On voit la joie sur leur visage, PRICELESS!!

J’ai réussi à avoir une place à la gate. Une place de choix que je ne quitte plus. 

CIGAR
C’est maintenant au tour de CIGAR.  Un band lui aussi très attendu.

Disons qu’ils ont une histoire un peu chaotique après plusieurs années de pause.  Les fans de la première heure ont dû attendre 23 ans pour la sortie de leur 2ème album (2022).  Ils ont fait des apparitions dans quelques festivals, mais rien de consistant.  Ils ont un son et un style particulier que je n’hais pas. 

Ils donnent, tous, une excellente prestation, mais je suis surtout impressionnée par la performance du drummer.

GOOD RIDDANCE 
Le pit est un peu moins “kid’s friendly”. La proximité commence de plus en plus à se faire sentir. 

Paradoxalement à mon amour et ma passion pour les spectacles, j’ai une faible tolérance pour les contacts humains. En ce moment, je suis servi. J’avoue que je ne m’attendais pas à autant d’intensité avant PENNYWISE.

J’ai choisi ma place, j’assume et je m’accroche.  Physiquement je n’ai plus la forme d’être front row, mais c’est plus fort que moi. Malgré l’inconfort, j’arrive quand même à focaliser sur la performance qui m’aide à tout oublier autour. 

Last Believer, enfin ! La seule chanson que je connais du band, mais aussi de toute la journée. Je peux enfin chanter avec tout le monde. Mon coup de cœur de la soirée.  

PENNYWISE
Un retour à l’adolescence. J’ai une longue et profonde histoire d’amour avec ce band. Je les ai découverts en 96, sur “un mixtape” oublié chez une amie qui n’aimait pas le punk, j’en ai donc hérité. J’ai découvert plein de bons bands, mais j’ai surtout accroché sur PENNYWISE. Pour le beat et la mélodie, bien sûr, mais aussi et surtout pour les paroles. Je les ai vus souvent LIVE, mais ce soir, c’est spécial. J’adore le concept des albums entiers. C’est comme ça qu’on écoutait les albums “dans le temps”, du début à la fin. 

Dès qu’ils montent sur scène, c’est instantané, j’oublie le contact des gens, la douleur de mon vieux corps de 44 ans et tout le reste.

J’enlève mes bouchons et il n’y a plus que la scène, le band et la musique qui compte. About Time est un album parfait pour une performance LIVE,  mélodique, rapide et intense du début à la fin.  

Je n’ai rien oublié des paroles. Jim le chanteur, qui est en grande forme, donne une performance parfaite. C’est un plaisir de chanter avec lui.  Toutes les chansons sont le fun à chanter, mais j’ai un faible pour Every Single Day, Freebase et bien sûr Same Old Story.  Après 3 chansons je n’ai déjà presque plus de voix.

Performance impeccable, au-delà de mes attentes extrêmement élevées. Je n’ai pas souvenir d’avoir tripé autant dans un show de PENNYWISE  Et je ne pense pas me tromper en disant que tout le monde sur le site tripe en ce moment.  Même la sécurité ne se cache pas pour partager leur bonheur avec la foule. C’est rare qu’on voit ça, ça fait du bien. Pas besoin du gilet pare-balle et de “l’air de bœuf”, pour surveiller une foule de joyeux punk rockers qui vivent le moment de leur vie!  

Ils ont le temps de jouer quelques chansons des autres albums et terminent immanquablement par la légendaire Bro Hymn.  Personnellement, je ne me tanne jamais de cette chanson.  Malgré ce qu’en pense certains, il y a toujours une énergie positive contagieuse, une sorte de magie associée à cette chanson LIVE.

Que d’émotions pour cette première journée de festival, wow!  Merci aux organisateurs, Amélie et Vincent, pour ces merveilleux moments.

Encore cette année, ce festival frôle la perfection. Les bands, le site, le staff, la sécurité, la bouffe, que je n’ai pas eu le temps encore d’essayer mais je me reprends demain sans faute.

A punk rock festival in the town of Pont-Rouge, just outside Quebec City.  A magnificent site, surrounded by woods and bordered by the river.   A festival of this quality just a few minutes from my home, a dream come true!  

Once again this year, we’re treated to a solid line-up:  

Friday: DOWNSTATER, CRAIG’S BROTHER, CIGAR, GOOD RIDDANCE, and the highlight of the evening, PENNYWISE, performing the entire About Time album (1995).

Saturday: KILLING DAISIES, COLOSFADE, FULLCOUNT, 30FOOTFALL, BAD COP BAD COP, BELVEDERE, CATCH 22, MAD CADDIES, STRUNG OUT, PENNYWISE, this time performing the entire Full Circle album (1997). 

Two of my favorite albums from one of my favorite bands.  What a stroke of luck.  I was so disappointed not to have been able to go to California when they played their first 5 albums in their entirety. I never thought I’d get to experience that. 

With such a full line-up, I’m not surprised that the tickets sold out.  

Friday June 9th 

We arrive at the site right on time!

As I make my entrance, I’m probably as excited as all the kids on the site. I love the excitement of music festivals. I’m ready to make new discoveries, but honestly I’m here for PENNYWISE. 

The evening kicks off at 5.45pm with DOWNSTATER, a melodic punk rock band from Quebec City.

PENNYWISE
Front man Jean-Philippe Lagacé , JP, is well known to hardcore fans for his band  GET THE SHOT.  He’s also well known for his fearlessness on stage and his way of engaging the crowd. Unfortunately, the evening is young. The punks are still making their entrance, familiarizing themselves with the site, sipping their first beers.  The crowd is on hand, but obviously too quiet for the singer’s taste.  That doesn’t stop him from ordering a mini wall of death.   

And I thought he couldn’t do crowd surfing, but I really underestimated him.  It’s with his guitar that he lets himself be carried away by the crowd. 

The festivities are on!

CRAIG’S BROTHER
At last, many would say.  Since they couldn’t make it last year, they’re eagerly awaited.   From Santa Cruz, California, the band cites Lagwagon as one of their main sources of inspiration, and it’s easy to hear why.   

Decent performance, but nothing more.  They definitely have a lot of fun, but the singer gives me the impression that he’s already a little too « on the party ». I don’t have a crush, but the people around me are having fun, and that’s what counts.  The bulk of the crowd is still scattered, at merch booths, bars and restaurants, but their fans are there and seem delighted by the performance.

With the Pit still mellow, there’s plenty of room for youngsters to experience the joys of music festivals. For the younger ones, there are inflatable games near the entrance, but for the older ones who want to follow their parents, it’s possible to do so in complete safety. It’s also a golden opportunity for parents to share their passion with their children. They live the full experience, circle pit, crowd surfing… You can see the joy on their faces, PRICELESS!

I managed to get a place at the gate.  A prime spot that I’ll never leave. 

CIGAR
Now it’s CIGAR‘s turn.  Another highly anticipated band. Let’s just say their history is a little chaotic, with several years of hiatus.  Early fans had to wait 23 years for the release of their 2nd album (2022).  They’ve made a few festival appearances, but nothing substantial.  They have a particular sound and style that I don’t hate.  They all give an excellent performance, but I’m especially impressed by the drummer’s performance.

GOOD RIDDANCE
The pit is a little less kid-friendly. The proximity is starting to be felt more and more.  Paradoxically to my love and passion for shows, I have a low tolerance for human contact. At the moment, I’m well served. I confess I wasn’t expecting this much intensity before PENNYWISE. I’ve chosen my place, I’m taking it on and I’m hanging in there.  Physically, I’m no longer in front row shape, but I can’t help it. Despite the discomfort, I still manage to focus on the performance, which helps me forget everything else around me.

Last Believer, finally !  The only song I know of the band, but also of the whole day.    I can finally sing along with everyone else.  My favorite song of the evening.  

PENNYWISE
A return to adolescence.  I have a long and deep love affair with this band. I discovered them in ’96, on a mixtape left at a friend’s house who didn’t like punk, so I inherited them. I’ve discovered a lot of good bands, but I’m especially hooked on PENNYWISE. For the beat and the melody, of course, but also and above all for the lyrics. I’ve seen them LIVE many times, but tonight is special.  I love the whole album concept. That’s how we used to listen to albums « back in the day », from beginning to end. 

As soon as they go on stage, it’s instantaneous, I forget the contact with people, the pain of my 44-year-old body and everything else.

I take off my earplugs and it’s all about the stage, the band and the music.  About Time is the perfect album for a LIVE performance, melodic, fast and intense from start to finish.  

I haven’t forgotten any of the lyrics.  Jim the singer, who is in great form, gives a perfect performance.   It’s a pleasure to sing with him.  All the songs are fun to sing, but I’m particularly partial to Every Single Day, Freebase and of course Same Old Story.  After 3 songs, my voice is already almost gone.

Impeccable performance, beyond my extremely high expectations. I can’t remember having tripped so much at a PENNYWISE show.  And I don’t think I’m wrong in saying that everyone on the site is tripping right now.  Even the security staff aren’t shy about sharing their happiness with the crowd. It’s rare to see that, and it feels good.   There’s no need for the bulletproof vest and the « air de bœuf », to keep an eye on a crowd of happy punk rockers who are having the time of their lives!  

They have time to play a few songs from other albums, and inevitably end with the legendary Bro Hymn.  Personally, I never get bored of this song.  Despite what some people think, there’s always an infectious positive energy, a kind of magic associated with this LIVE song.

So many emotions on this first day of the festival, wow!  Thanks to the organizers for these wonderful moments.  Once again this year, this festival borders on perfection.   The bands, the site, the staff, the security, the food, all of which I haven’t had time to try out yet, but I’ll try again tomorrow without fail.
