BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE + OF MICE & MEN + VENDED THÉATRE CAPITOLE | 09.10.2023

En ce lundi 9 octobre, Med et moi nous dirigeons vers le Capitole pour une autre soirée de metalcore. BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE est un groupe bien ancré dans la communauté métal. Je ne connaissais OF MICE & MEN que de nom et pas du tout VENDED. Une soirée découvertes de plus à mon actif !

Membres : Cole Espeland – Guitare + Griffin Taylor – Voix + Simon Crahan  – Batterie + Connor Grodzicki – Guitare + Jeremiah Pugh – bass

Avant la soirée, j’ai fait mes recherches et j’ai découvert que 2 des membres sont les fils de membres de Slipknot. (Griffin est le fils de Corey et Simon celui de Shawn « Clown »).

Bien que sur son site, le groupe se vante d’avoir un son unique, j’ai au contraire trouvé que ça ressemblait beaucoup à du Slipknot en version « allégée », c’est-à-dire avec moins de percussions, entre autres. Les musiciens sont sans contredit doués. Griffin a une belle voix « clean » et un vocal franc. Ils ont réussi à me donner le goût de les écouter et de suivre leur développement. Mais je persiste à croire qu’ils gagneraient à se détacher davantage de l’influence de Slipknot et à trouver le petit quelque chose qui va les différencier.

Le groupe de métalcore Californien a fait ses marques. Le fan base est solide et on le sentait clairement dans l’atmosphère du Capitole. C’est le drummer (seul membre d’origine) qui a fait son entrée en premier. Entrée qui a été chaudement accueillie. Nous avons eu droit à 9 pièces. Pour ma part j’ai préféré les 2 dernières, soit Bloom et Second & Sebring. 

OF MICE & MEN, comme tout bon groupe de métalcore, alterne entre rythmes mélodiques et breakdowns. Ceux qui préfèrent les passages mélodiques sont comblés.

Les 2 guitaristes se complètent à merveille. Cependant ceux qui, comme moi, préfèrent des breakdowns pesant à souhait vont rester sur leur appétit. Le drum est percutant, mais l’absence de bass se fait sentir. Attention, ce n’est que mon avis personnel. Dans l’ensemble, ce sont d’excellents musiciens et le public a grandement apprécié.

Qui ne connaît pas BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE? Avec son métalcore mélodique plutôt passe-partout, le groupe Britannique a su aller chercher et conserver son public, de même que d’être accepté même par les métalleux qui aiment moins le genre Emo. D’ailleurs le public, qui était plutôt tranquille pendant les prestations des 2 premiers groupes a semblé sortir de son sommeil à l’arrivée des membres de BULLET sur la scène.

On a enfin vu du mouvement sur le plancher et même au balcon. La foule a chanté avec Matthew du premier au dernier morceau. On a eu droit à des cris, des acclamations, du crowd surfing. 

Même si je connaissais BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, je dois admettre que je n’avais jamais pris le temps de m’arrêter et d’analyser leur musique. Je peux dire que mon coup de coeur va à Jason Bowld et son double base drum sharp à l’os.

Les 3 autres membres du groupe prennent pleine possession de la scène. Dès qu’ils n’ont pas à chanter, ils s’éloignent de leurs micros et vont connecter avec les fan d’un côté à l’autre du stage.

On a eu droit à 15 morceaux, dont Piece of Me, Knives, You Want a Battle? (Here’s a War, Don’t Need You.

Avant la 14e pièce, nous avons appris que c’était le dernier show du groupe pour un moment, puisqu’ils se retirent pour écrire et enregistrer un nouvel album. On ne les reverra qu’en 2025. Ils nous ont quittée en beauté sur Waking the Demon.

Une autre belle soirée passée au Capitole. J’ai entendu plusieurs commentaires de fans de musique qui n’ont pas eu une bonne première impression au Capitole. Je me dois de leur lever mon chapeau. Le personnel était vraiment souriant, accueillant et beaucoup moins rigides que pour les premiers shows de District 7 à cet endroit. Une salle que j’apprends à apprécier un peu plus à chaque fois.

P.S.: Toutes mes excuses pour le délai avant de publier ma critique. Des problèmes de santé m’ont obligée à m’éloigner quelques jours de mon ordinateur.

On this Monday, October 9, Med and I head to the Capitole for another evening of metalcore. BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE are a band with deep roots in the metal community. I only knew OF MICE & MEN by name, and not VENDED at all. Another evening of discoveries for me!

Before the event, I did my research and discovered that 2 of the members are the sons of Slipknot members. (Griffin is Corey’s son and Simon is Shawn « Clown »‘s). Although on their website, the band boasts of having a unique sound, I found that it sounded a lot like Slipknot in a « lighter » version, i.e. with less percussion, among other things. The musicians are undeniably gifted. Griffin has a nice clean voice and a straightforward vocal. They succeeded in making me want to listen to them and follow their development. But I still think they need to detach themselves more from Slipknot’s influence and find that little something that will set them apart.

This Californian metalcore band has made its mark. The fan base is solid, and you could clearly feel it in the Capitol atmosphere. It was the drummer (the only original member) who made his entrance first. An entrance that was warmly welcomed. We were treated to 9 pieces. I personally preferred the last 2, Bloom and Second & Sebring. 

OF MICE & MEN, like all good metalcore bands, alternate between melodic rhythms and breakdowns. Those who prefer the melodic passages are in for a treat. The 2 guitarists complement each other perfectly. However, those who, like me, prefer heavy breakdowns will be disappointed. The drums are punchy, but the lack of bass is noticeable. Note that this is just my personal opinion. All in all, these are excellent musicians, and the audience really appreciated them. 

BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE

Who hasn’t heard of BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE? With their melodic, all-purpose metalcore, this British band has managed to find and keep their audience, and to be accepted even by metalheads who are less fond of the Emo genre. In fact, the audience, which had been rather quiet during the performances of the first 2 bands, seemed to wake up from its nap when the members of BULLET took to the stage. We finally saw some movement on the floor and even in the balcony. The crowd sang along with Matthew from the first song to the last. There was screaming, cheering and crowd surfing. 

Even though I knew BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE, I have to admit I’d never taken the time to stop and analyze their music. I can say that my favorite part is Jason Bowld and his double base drum sharp to the bone. The other 3 members of the band take full possession of the stage. As soon as they’re not singing, they step away from their microphones and connect with fans from one side of the stage to the other.

We were treated to 15 tracks, including Piece of Me, Knives, You Want a Battle? (Here’s a War, Don’t Need You. Before the 14th song, we learned that this was the band’s last show for a while, as they are retiring to write and record a new album. We won’t see them again until 2025. They left us in style on Waking the Demon.

Another fine evening at the Capitole. I’ve heard several comments from music fans who didn’t have a good first impression at the Capitole. I have to take my hat off to them. The staff were really smiling, welcoming and much less rigid than for the first District 7 shows at this venue. A venue I’m learning to appreciate a little more each time.
