JON SPENCER + RETAIL SIMPS | L’ANTI | 08.02.2024

Petite soirée pas mal rock’n’roll jeudi le 8 février, à L’Anti. C’était JON SPENCER et Tha\The\Theee RETAIL SIMPS qui s’y produisaient, deux formations que je ne connaissais pas et que je suis bien contente d’avoir découvert.

Les RETAIL SIMPS nous arrivaient de Montréal en quatuor et étaient plus que crinqués. Ça a commencé un peu tout croche et je me suis demandé si Joe Chamandy chanterait tout le temps de cette façon… Mais non, ça s’est replacé et c’était parti pour un feu roulant de tounes enchaînées l’une après l’autre sans pause.

C’en était presque difficile de les distinguer. Mais bon, c’est dans l’esprit du punk’n’roll, et même si leur prestation a été trop brève, le groupe a bien réchauffé la salle pour ce qui suivait.

Et ce qui a suivi, ouf je ne m’attendais pas à ça! Pour les non-initiés, imaginez un mix entre les B-52s pour la voix et l’énergie, Lou Reed pour le look, les Black Crowes pour la base de blues rock (même s’ils n’en sont pas les pionniers) et Royal Blood pour la rythmique. Je vous le dis, JON SPENCER est un paquet de nerfs : il se mettait à genoux et sautait de temps à autre, avec sa guitare, il chantait à pleins poumons et bouffait son micro… Oui oui! Il se met le micro dans la bouche!!

C’était intense. Il a même décidé, un moment donné, de juste descendre dans le public et aller boire une bouteille d’eau. Avec sa bassiste Kendall Wind bien discrète et son batteur Macky Bowman tout aussi énervé que lui (et qui pourraient passer pour ses enfants), on en a eu pour notre argent – et sérieux, si j’étais moins coincée, j’aurais dansé fort.

I was in for a nice rock’n’roll evening on Thursday, February 8th, at L’Anti. There was JON SPENCER and Tha\The\Theee RETAIL SIMPS, two bands I’d never heard of before and that I’m very happy to know now.

The RETAIL SIMPS had just arrived from Montreal as a quartet and they are more than cranked up. It starts off a little weird, and I wonder if Joe Chamandy will be singing like that all the time… But no, it gets better and we’re off for a rapid-fire set of songs, one after the other without a break. It’s almost difficult to tell them apart. But hey, it’s in the spirit of punk’n’roll, and even if their performance is too brief, the band warms up the room nicely for what’s to follow.

And what follows – wow, I wasn’t expecting that! For the uninitiated, imagine a mix between the B-52s for the voice and energy, Lou Reed for the looks, the Black Crowes for the blues/rock base (even though they didn’t break any ground) and Royal Blood for the rhythmic section. I’m telling you, JON SPENCER is a boisterous one: he gets down on his knees and jumps up and down a few times, with his guitar, he sings at the top of his lungs and devours his microphone… Yes! He puts the microphone in his mouth! Ok then… At one point, he even decides to just step down into the audience and drink a bottle of water. With bassist Kendall Wind keeping a low profile and drummer Macky Bowman just as energetic as Jon is (and who both could pass for his kids), we get our money’s worth – and seriously, if I wasn’t so stuck up, I’d have danced the night away.
