WACKEN METAL BATTLE – QUÉBEC | LA SOURCE DE LA MARTINIÈRE | 23.02.2024

Tout fan de métal qui se respecte connait le WACKEN OPEN AIR. Prenant place dans la commune allemande de Wacken, il s’agit de l’un des plus gros festivals de musique métal au monde. Et à chaque année, des groupes émergents de divers pays ont la chance de se frayer une place sur une des scènes du festival par le biais de la WACKEN METAL BATTLE. L’année dernière, c’est le groupe trifluvien STRIGAMPIRE qui a remporté la bataille canadienne. Qui l’emportera cette année ? Il est encore trop tôt pour le dire puisque la compétition ne fait que commencer. 

Le Canada est divisé comme suit : Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Oshawa, Hamilton, Toronto, Montréal et Québec. Le groupe gagnant de Québec affrontera le groupe gagnant de Montréal dans la finale de l’Est. Les gagnants de chaque région s’affronteront dans la finale nationale le 25 mai 2024 à Edmonton, Alberta. Ce vendredi 23 février à la Source de la Martinière ce sont 4 groupes qui se sont affrontés pour gagner la ronde de l’Est du Québec : VORMIR, TURBO, AGELESS MADNESS et POLYGRAPH.

VORMIR
C’est la formation néo-écossaise VORMIR qui a ouvert les hostilités. Bien que tous les membres ont incontestablement du talent, leur métal “bonbon” n’était, à mon avis, pas suffisamment agressif pour se tailler une place vers la finale de l’Est.

Pour paraphraser les juges, si tous leurs morceaux avaient ressemblé davantage au dernier, la game aurait été toute autre. 

TURBO
Le 2e groupe à essayer de convaincre les juges qu’il méritait sa chance, est un autre groupe de la Nouvelle-Écosse, TURBO. Bien que l’année dernière ils aient accédé à la finale québécoise, ils n’auront pas cette chance cette année. Les juges ont dit que le groupe gagnant l’a remporté par 1 seul point et, même s’ils n’ont pas dit qui c’était, à mon humble avis, c’est TURBO qui suivait d’aussi proche la 1re place. Les gars nous un offert un trash’n’roll heavy métal plus qu’excellent. Ils ont un style bien assumé et une superbe présence sur scène.

AGELESS MADNESS
Nous avons ensuite eu droit à une prestation théâtrale avec AGELESS MADNESS, un groupe heavy metal de Drummondville.

Leur mise en scène, bien qu’intéressante et divertissante, est un peu too much et son manque de structure a tendance à nous faire oublier la qualité de la musique plutôt que de la mettre en valeur. Ils ont pourtant un excellent potentiel. 

POLYGRAPH
Le dernier groupe à compétitionner était POLYGRAPH. Je dois avouer que le groupe de Québec nous en a mis plein la vue et les oreilles avec un metalcore percutant. Ils ont pris la scène et la salle d’assaut.

Ils sont faits pour la scène et je dois admettre qu’ils méritent cette 1^re place.

Avec leurs instruments et leurs micros sans fil, ils ont une grande liberté qui leur permet de descendre de la scène et se mêler au public. 

La compétition était serrée et j’espère avoir la chance de voir la finale de l’Est à Montréal.

Every self-respecting metal fan knows about WACKEN OPEN AIR. Taking place in the German town of Wacken, it’s one of the biggest metal music festival in the world. And every year, up-and-coming bands from various countries have the chance to compete for a place on one of the festival’s stages through the WACKEN METAL BATTLE. Last year, Trifluvian band STRIGAMPIRE won the Canadian battle. Who will win this year? It’s still too early to say, as the competition has only just begun. 

Canada is divided as follows: Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Oshawa, Hamilton, Toronto, Montreal and Quebec City. The winning group from Quebec City will face the winning group from Montreal in the Eastern final. The winners from each region will face off in the national final on May 25, 2024 in Edmonton, Alberta. On Friday, February 23 at Source de la Martinière, 4 bands competed to win the Eastern Quebec round:  VORMIR, TURBO, AGELESS MADNESS and POLYGRAPH.

VORMIR
Nova Scotia’s VORMIR opened the hostilities. Although all the members are undeniably talented, their candy metal was, in my opinion, not aggressive enough to earn a place in the eastern final. To paraphrase the judges, if all their songs had been more like the last one, the game would have been quite different. 

TURBO
The 2nd group to try and convince the judges that they deserved their chance was another Nova Scotia band, TURBO. Although they made it to the Quebec final last year, they won’t be getting the chance this year. The judges said that the winning band won by just 1 point, and although they didn’t say who it was, in my humble opinion, it was TURBO who was a close second to 1st place. The guys gave us a trash’n’roll heavy metal show that was more than excellent. They’ve got a real style and a superb stage presence.

AGELESS MADNESS
We were then treated to a theatrical performance by AGELESS MADNESS, a heavy metal band from Drummondville. Their staging, while interesting and entertaining, is a little too much, and its lack of structure tends to make us forget the quality of the music rather than emphasize it. Yet they have excellent potential. 

POLYGRAPH
The last band to compete was POLYGRAPH. I have to admit that this band from Quebec City blew our minds and ears away with their hard-hitting metalcore. They took the stage and the room by storm. They’re made for the stage, and I have to admit that they deserve this 1st place. With their instruments and wireless microphones, they have a great deal of freedom to get off stage and mingle with the audience. 

The competition was close, and I hope to have the chance to see the Eastern final in Montreal.
