1000MODS + FREEDOM HAWK + SUBSUN + TRU§H | LA SOURCE | 12.09.2023

Grosse soirée de stoner/heavy/doom rock prévue à La Source! C’est là qu’on y reçoit quatre groupes, un de Québec, un de Gatineau, un de Virginie (É.-U.), et un de Grèce (rien de moins), pour faire vibrer la place à grands coups de pédales de fuzz, flanger, etc. Les fans sont au rendez-vous, les méga amplis prennent toute la place, en plus des deux kits de batterie… Ça promet. 

Je serai franche avec vous, je n’ai pris aucune note ce soir-là. J’ai plutôt choisi de me laisser porter par la vibe chaleureuse qui planait à ce moment, au risque d’en oublier par bouts. C’est TRU§H, un quatuor formé plutôt récemment, qui donne le coup d’envoi avec un son lourd et bien rythmé. C’est leur deuxième prestation sur scène cette année, et ça roule.

Seul bémol que j’ai déjà mentionné : on n’entend pratiquement pas le clavier. Et pourtant, il faut saluer le dévouement de la claviériste, qui a joué malgré son poignet foulé (ou cassé, je n’ai posé de question).

SUBSUN prend le relais pour tirer des salves de stoner dans la lignée de SONS OF ARRAKIS (avec qui ils ont déjà joué d’ailleurs). Les chansons suivent une thématique de biologie de l’évolution faisant penser à celle de THE OCEAN COLLECTIVE. Pour l’occasion, le trio joue la plupart des pièces de son album Parasite, sorti en juillet 2022.

Ce sera un groupe à suivre aussi, qui sait montrer son plaisir d’être scène. Il se fait du bon stock au Québec, et TRU§H et SUBSUN en font partie.

C’est au tour de FREEDOM HAWK de prendre possession du terrain, un quatuor ne niant rien de l’influence de BLACK SABBATH sur ses compos et ses sonorités. Même les effets vocaux sont similaires – grâce à une pédale de distorsion augmentant les fréquences aiguës à la limite du tolérable (pour moi). C’est lourd à souhait, du heavy metal classique comme il se doit.

Enfin, l’équipe de 1000MODS vient s’installer en prenant grand soin de régler le son et l’éclairage suivant leurs standards. Par contre, l’intermède est assez long, avec une des musiques d’ambiance les plus insupportables que j’ai entendues. C’est le seul point (très) négatif du show. Pour le reste, on assiste encore à une prestation professionnelle – 1000MODS existe quand même depuis plus d’une quinzaine d’années – où les musiciens jouent les yeux fermés, où le batteur se décroche la mâchoire pour donner le rythme, où on ressent le feeling qui émane de l’ensemble.

Le groupe pige dans tous ses albums et nous offre 12 pièces d’affilée sans trop parler. Même que ça finit un peu sec – pas de rappel, et goodbye leurs affaires sont ramassées tout de suite. En tout cas, on espère quand même revoir 1000MODS au pays, car eux aussi ont leurs fans dévoués ici.

A big night of stoner/heavy/doom rock is planned at La Source! Four bands, one each from Quebec City, Gatineau, Virginia (USA) and Greece (no less), are set to rock the place with fuzz and flanger pedals and more. The fans are there, giant amps take up all the space, not to forget the two drum kits… It looks promising.

I’ll be honest with you, I didn’t take any notes that night. Instead, I chose to let myself be carried away by the warm vibe that was in the air that night, at the risk of forgetting bits and pieces of it.

TRU§H, a quartet formed fairly recently, kicked things off with a heavy, rhythmic sound. This is their second appearance on stage this year, and it’s going well. The only downside I’ve already mentioned is that you can hardly hear the keyboard. And yet, the keyboardist’s dedication must be commended, for playing despite a sprained (or broken, I didn’t ask) wrist. Now that’s professionalism on her part. SUBSUN then takes over, firing stoner salvos in the vein of SONS OF ARRAKIS (with whom they’ve already played, incidentally). The songs follow an evolutionary biology theme reminiscent of THE OCEAN COLLECTIVE. For the occasion, the trio plays most of the tracks from their album Parasite, released in July 2022. They’ll be a band to watch, too, and they who know how to show their enjoyment of the stage. There’s some great material out there in Quebec, and TRU§H and SUBSUN are among them.

It’s now FREEDOM HAWK‘s turn to take??to the field, a quartet that denies nothing of BLACK SABBATH’s influence on their songwriting and sound. Even the vocal effects are similar – thanks to a distortion pedal that raises the high frequencies to the limit of what’s tolerable (for me). It’s heavy as hell, classic heavy metal as it should be.

Finally, the 1000MODS team sets up, taking great care to adjust the sound and lighting to their standards. The interlude is rather long, however, with some of the most annoying background music I’ve ever heard. This is the show’s only (very) negative point. As for the rest, it’s again a professional performance – 

1000MODS has, after all, been around for over fifteen years – where the musicians play with their eyes closed, where the drummer visibly articulates to set the rhythm, where you can feel the feeling emanating from the ensemble. The band pulls from all their albums and delivers 12 songs in a row without talking too much. It even ends a little dry – no encore, and their stuff is picked up right away goodbye thanks. In any case, we still hope to see 1000MODS back here, because they too have their dedicated fans.
